Thoughts on another OSU L.
I’ve made my peace with the fact that this team is going 1-11.
Hopefully, the AD will make the right hire that will turn this around in the next few years.
1-11. There is no game on the schedule they can win. And most will be blowouts. It’s our job to keep supporting them. Loyal and true. That’s how it works.
I’m looking past the season to the ceremony where we dedicate the Mike Gundy statue and name the field after him. Will we also be presenting him with his $15 million severance check at the same time, or will that be a separate ceremony? Either way, the sooner they set the date(s), the sooner I can ask for time off at work.
That looks to be the case since they seem to struggle just finding 11 men to put on the field
I don’t see us winning another game. It would have to be some weather impacted game with lots of luck for us in an error filled game.
If true, our coaching staff did a terrible job putting a 16 million dollar team together. It goes back to what’s always been true. Gundy might be good at conditioning and developing players over time. However, he sure as hell still sucked at recruiting talent based on what I’ve seen. Not trying to knock the players. They just aren’t that good, and Gundy put together an old and outdated staff. That’s how you get beat by Tulsa and blown out by .500 teams.
Grateful we don’t have Harding (Ark.) on the schedule.
- This is not fun. In the words of Petey Jones in “Remember the Titans”…Zero fun, sir.
- Honestly, not sure when the losing will stop. There was a part of me that didn’t want to believe 1-11 was ever possible at Oklahoma State ever again. Now, it’s almost a guarantee.
- We have no QB’s on this roster. None. That’s a massive problem. When we signed Zane, I really thought we had something special. I was dead wrong.
- The defections from the secondary hurt. Defense has been hit harder than offense by the portal. Neither side of the ball can give the other a spark. Complimentary football doesn’t exist.
- I feel awful for this coaching staff and team. None of them asked to be in such a horrible situation. Kudos to all of them for simply continuing to show up and fight: I will never place blame on this one season for the current state of the program.
- To everyone who still believes that Gundy deserves a statue, GTFO. He may not even deserve to have the field named for him or be in the Ring of Honor at this point. He willfully allowed this program to burn with his arrogance and negligence.
- It’ll never happen, but leadership needs to publicly apologize for allowing it to go this far. By leadership I mean Chad and the BoR. Dr. Shrum should have to as well, but she’s gone. And she was the main culprit in keeping Gundy.
- Chad’s entire career as AD could be defined by his next hire: He has to get this right.
On to the next one! Go Pokes!
Sadly, this is on target. Gundy refused to realize that, in the portal/NIL era, recruiting is absolutely everything and there is precious little time to develop players. Is it good for college football? Do I like it? Hell, no. But, it’s reality. The Gundy/OSU strategy of recruiting lower level talent and developing them made perfect sense 15 years ago, but it stopped working for pretty obvious reasons that were ignored because no one liked it. This was a recipe for disaster and now we’re deep in exactly that.
There’s no could. It will absolutely define his career as the OSU AD.
I said this when Gundy was fired, and I’ll say it again:
The next hire will be most the important hire in the history of this university.
We had a previous NFL QB as a QB coach and a HC that played the position that sucked at evaluating that position.
I say go ahead and put him in the Ring of Honor. However, not so sure you make a statue or name a field after a guy that’s given you one conference title in 21 years. I figured that should go to the only coach that’s actually won a national title (Jim Lookabaugh).
He screwed up by allowing Gundy to come back (which I believe). That may not be true, but if he did it was a colossal mistake. I knew it was once I heard who was hired on the coaching staff, and some of the players we were getting. I thought they would be very lucky to get to 6-7 wins. It’s not even close to that.
Regarding your Point #6.
I understand that Gundy is responsible for our current situation. At the same time he raised expectations for OSU fans. There is no doubt that he is the best coach in OSU’s history. Yes, I realize that is only 1 conference trophy in 21 years. Consider this: what if OSU had hired someone else and they either had seasons like Bob Simmons and were fired or we hired someone who was fairly successful like Les Miles or Jimmy Johnson and they left for a better program and then we hired an average coach. Look at the history of OSU, there isn’t much except some great individual players.
As a fan, I want more, but at the same time Gundy won a lot of games. Is 4-14 vs OU satisfying? No, but winning the last bedlam was big. Destroying OU in 2011 44-10, yeah that was a really big win. Beating Notre Dame, after we were down 28-7 in the first half. Big time.
OSU will never become a dominant program. Can we win the conference more often, sure especially since OU is out of it. Do we have any real advantages over the other schools in this league? Not really. Facilities are nice but NIL paves the way now. Whether you like Gundy or not, OSU will either name the Field after him or build a statue or both. If Gundy didn’t have the career he had, there would not be as much interest in Cowboy football.
The next HC will probably reflect what is possible at OSU. Bill thinks OSU will win the conference every 3 years….it is this delusional expectation that makes so many fans on this site so mad and irrational. I promise you several of you will come after me only pointing to the negatives, especially the current situation but as the years roll on and coaches come and go you’ll realize that OSU is just an average to slightly above average program for football.
Regarding #3, the silver lining of that is this: if we hire a good HV, with the portal and NIL we can solve that problem lickety-split
Maybe not a statue, but I think for his achievements on the field he may be deserving of the ROH. And let’s not forget he did still have some pretty good success as HC.
So how would you have done that with a HC that became worse than Bob Simmons with an easier conference schedule?
I said I think we should. I didn’t say we will. There’s a difference there. Gundy realistically should have three conference titles during his time here. That would be once every 7 years or so. We’ve competed for a conference title 6 times between 2011-2023. So to say it’s “delusional” isn’t exactly correct either.
Gundy played not to lose football. He rarely played to win when it came to a conference title. See 2013, 2016, and 2021 as examples. I would never tell you Gundy didn’t have good success. I just simply said he’s not the type of coach you need during the NIL era. He made it publicly clear that he was sick of it and didn’t want to deal with it. You don’t need someone like that as your “CEO”. I think the latter results have made that known.
Baylor won the conference three times from 2013-2021. You guys say it’s delusional when other programs similar or worse to OSU have done it. I think NIL funding will increase and we’ll find a coach that fits the current environment. However, that remains to be seen and I’m optimistic with the main problem out of the way now.
You said and I quote “I expect to win the conference every 3 years”. Not play in the title game. Win it. I wonder what the over/under is for when you will start complaining about the new coach….
Still doesn’t mean WILL. I’d be alright if we did every 4-5. Given the competition in this conference isn’t drastically difficult.
If he doesn’t do his job like Gundy hasn’t for the last 365+ days then obviously any reasonable and logical person will complain. However, he’s not going to be in a position of complacency like mediocre Mike was. So I’m willing to bet he’s going to try a little harder
.
To me, Gundy took the $15 million buyout in lieu of the statue and field-naming. I may be wrong, but I believe they asked Gundy to announce his resignation effective the end of the year, and he said no and that OSU would have to fire him and pay him the buyout, basically, “Screw you and the school, pay me”.
My thoughts here. Now I have no real information on who has done what but like most everyone here I have heard “things” and have formulated an opinion. To put an analogy to that opinion I have come up with this. Consider coach Gundy’s inability to change with the times, NIL, pay for play, etc as dumping a drum of hydrazine all over your car, a substance that is highly corrosive and explosive, which causes said car to start to degrade badly only to have your neighbor, in our case the BOR and/or donors, to come along and toss a match on the hydrazine to get rid of it. And here we are.
Man, say this again for the people in the back. We’re on level with about half the league. There are two or three teams that have a competitive edge against us. The rest are probably little below us. There is no reason we should be favored to win.
