2024 Football Season Thread - We Suck

:+1:

I had a wide range of emotions on that play. ā€œWoah, why the heck isnā€™t that a safety? He made a play on the ball??ā€¦ Well, at least we pinned them deepā€¦ woahhh what the f*ck?!ā€

I think heā€™s asking why it was a touchback and not down where we touched it (the 2) or where the SDst guy began to touch it (at the 1).

Iā€™m pretty sure itā€™s because after we touched it, it was still rolling toward the endzone and even though the returner tried to play the ball he didnā€™t get full possession of it until he was already in the endzone. So they determined the ball to be in the endzone and a touchback. If he would have fully possessed it at the 1 it would have been down at the 1.

By the way, horrible play by our number 10. That was a pretty easy pin and the dude slapped the ball toward the endzone. Lol

So it comes down to control then. Neither the defender who initially touched it nor the receiver had full control until it got to the end zone. Maybe that was what they were thinking.

Yeah I think thatā€™s the case. Although I think the rule should be changed.

Makes sense for it to be a touchback if the punt coverage team touches it in the field of play but doesnā€™t fully possess it, but if the fielding team touches it in the field of play but doesnā€™t fully possess it until itā€™s in the endzone it should be down where they touched it.

He kicks an interesting ball. Has supreme power but the ball doesnt rotate that fast, almost like perfectly in the middle between a standard rotating football and a knuckleball. I wonder if this enables it to go further. Not sure, not an expert at aerodynamics.

Regardless, he was fantastic in week 1.

I had it explained to me, and it was so convoluted idk if I can explain it correctly but basically because we touched it and didnā€™t control it their player was able to try and return it without it being a safety

It makes sense as rotation would use some of the energy by the force applied to the ball.

Maybe you should ask this guy?

Some of the #olds will understandā€¦

In theory I think thatā€™s right, but how do you hit the ball hard without causing it to rotate? Maybe he hits the ball with foot higher on the ball towards the center instead of lower on the ball (which is maybe more standard)

That Iā€™m not sure of.

Thanks for clarifying, you nailed what i was asking! And yeah i get protection for the returning team after the kicking team has touched it, but it should be a spot the best of 1) where the kicking team touched it or 2) where the play ended. Not sure I get why the returning team would be able to essentially help the ball into a touchback.

Yeah I figured that was the question, I had the exact same one. Itā€™s weird, he touched it at the 1 and ran backwards into the endzone and got tackled. Either thatā€™s a safety or itā€™s not, fine. But you canā€™t place the ball where he was tackled but also pretend he didnā€™t touch it at the same time.
