Not exactly. Right after Eddie Sutton retired due to his alcohol issue. Sean Sutton admitted he had a drug abuse problem. He most likely wasn’t in any shape to be a Head Coach. He finished overall 39-29 at OSU and didn’t make the tournament at all. So to blame Holder for having a “standoff” with the Suttons simply isn’t true.
Holder needed to have a stable coach in that position. He was just doing his job as the he AD. So there’s no guarantee that if Sean was still the head coach afterwards that we were going to be any better. Just like there’s no guarantee we’ll win another conference title in football with Gundy as the HC.
Campbell still has 11 years left at Iowa State to prove he can win one conference title in 20 years just like Mike Gundy. Also, he still made a bowl game returning all his starters. Gundy found a way not to win a single conference game. Which Campbell has never done since he’s been in the Big 12 .
Not only has Campbell nearly matched Gundy in overall wins since 2018. He actually has more conference wins than Gundy since 2018. Not to mention he’s played for the conference title just as many times, and won just as many NY6 bowls as Gundy during that time frame.
When Dillingham wanted to learn how to build ASU after their disastrous 2023 season. He didn’t fly to Stillwater to learn from Gundy. He flew to Ames to learn from Campbell. Guess what happened next? He won the Big 12 in 2024 . He wanted to win the conference, not just be content with making a bowl game.

If Dillingham went to Matt to learn how to win the conference I would think before going he would have gone somewhere that they “ had “ won the conference. That’s a 2025 ranking and is heavily influenced by recruiting rankings, which is a flaw IMO, and what happened last year to some degree. Also anywhere you see Kyle Whittingham’s name it could easily be HCMG instead. So for me I don’t find it all that interesting.

Playing not to lose isn’t a beneficial strategy any longer. I think Gundy’s 14 year drought of not winning the conference is evidence for that .

You literally just told on yourself. You’re holding Matt to a standard that not even Gundy could accomplish. Matt still went 7-6 and to a bowl game with most of his returning starters in 2021. Gundy returned almost all his starters and went 3-9 in 2024 .
I never said Matt was great. All I said was that his total wins are similar to Gundy since 2018, and that he has more conference wins. If we’re going to use your standard for what a program should be then in your eyes Matt is the equivalent to Iowa State as Gundy is to OSU. Not to mention Matt has to play Iowa every year while Gundy plays Piss State every other year. We all know how much you get on your knees for Gundy .
