Eric Morris Has Cowboys on Cutting Edge of New College Football Trend Which Powered Indiana’s Playoff Runs

Hey champ,

You mean when I live corrected you? Yeah. I was trying to cut your wild lies, conjectures, and hypocrisies out before they metastasized to see if that would help.

You can’t correct someone when you’ve been consistently wrong. Which is exactly why you hesitate to make any predictions. I’ve been calling some of this stuff out months in advance. While you consistently argue with those that do and end up eating crow. You’re the type that never learns.

I for one, am excited about this next years team and cautiously quite optimistic, considering the rating of the portal class, especially the quarterback. The thing is though two things can be true at one time it’s true that Gundy was an amazing coach for a long time. It’s also true that he lost his edge because of the portal and NIL. It can also be true that someone withheld money because they didn’t like coach Gundy. This is a shame, but understandable, considering something Mike said. We all want the same things, why not get along??

I’m trying to be. I could make an argument either way.

On the one hand, I don’t think importing a good G6 team to the P4 makes a good P4 team. We’ve grabbed a few guys from the P4 ranks, but it looks like our starting lineup is going to be 75% UNT. UNT wasn’t even dominant last year. They lost against their two best opponents and neither game was especially competitive and Mestemaker was 2:3 TD:INT in both. He’s young, the pressure probably got to him. They also played two overtime games against two other lesser teams. Their defense was nothing impressive even against the G6 and we got the same DC and a lot of those transfers.

On the other hand, we get handed a soft schedule. Of the 5 worst teams from last year (which includes us), we get the other 4 at home. Iowa State is gutted. We get an FCS game and Tulsa. Maybe a good G6 team can win 6 or 7 games with that setup. The transfers from UNT will provide stability and continuity. They could evolve individually and as a unit and be better. The few P4 guys coming in could bolster some of the weak spots. Let’s say we get 6 wins. That’s a good first year coming off of the last two years. Probably gets the fanbase fired up. I think it’s doable. Then we see how he builds from there.

Listen, I was on here when he was hired saying they would win 7/8 games and I stand by that (W’s are @Tulsa/Murray St/@Houston/@Iowa St/Colo/KU/UCF). I will also admit that you make some very valid points. This league isnt full of Doomsday D’s outside of Tech, but its relative to what you will have on your roster. So while I definitely think the 27’ season is going to be pushing the 9 win mark, the 26’ year could have more potholes than what the optimists think

“…true that someone withheld money because they didnt like Coach Gundy” This is a fascinating part of the NIL world to me. Its a clear cut indication of the Boosters running things, either directly or indirectly. There were people that were involved with college football when NIL/Portal hit that were from two factions; We love it - they embraced every part of it and realized it gave them an opportunity to compete right away. Some were coaches. Some were Boosters. ; We hate it - they thought it was going to kill the sport. Or they just didnt like the taste it left of having to cater to teenagers who havent done a thing. Some coaches left. Some boosters said nope. Either way, their stubbornness led to their program falling behind.

You may hate the setup, as most do. You may hate the portal, as most do. But thats the way the game is played now and if you dont like it…you need to walk away. Because the only way to keep your program thriving is by adapting. OSU is in a better late than never situation

You have a coach that wasted Boone’s money, one conference title in twenty years, wouldn’t adjust at all, complained about changes, and then found a way to get worse in a conference that became less competitive. Is that someone you’re ready to invest millions of dollars in for the future? A person that has no further interest at heart for the football program? Business people are more intelligent than this. Which is why some are where they are in this life.

Houston was pretty solid last year. Are they losing a lot? I haven’t really looked them over. Based on last year, @WVU seems like an easier win, even though playing in Morgantown can be tough.

This was addressed by another poster but yes, MG started out really well but fizzled down the strerch (Hubris?) - poor hiring decisions that did not put players in a position to win and a former qb that couldn’t identify and get quarterbacks up to speed in less than 3 or 4 years. What was that all about???

Except for the excellent hire of Knowles the team seemed like a shell of former teams, especially after Rudolph left and then the last 4 years it seemed like it was smoke and mirrors - non competitive against solid opponents. Very few would invest more money in that product, even without Mike’s surly attitude.

People don’t seem to understand that a person’s pride, ego, and arrogance takes a back seat to the hand that feeds them :man_shrugging:.

Those are the two swing games for me. Houston is better than WVU, but depending on when that game is…Morgantown can be tricky. I really dont know what Houston has done portal wise.

This. oSu can get to 8+ wins next year and some (a lot) may be Morris’ offensive matchups and play calling but IMHO other things need to occur: players must get into the playbook and get it down so that practices reps are more meaningful, many players must maximum time in weight room and training table (several are too lean for the pops they will receive week in and week out), and there cannot be too many injuries at key positions. These and others (chemistry, desire, etc.) could be the difference between 5/6 wins and 7/8 wins…

What helps oSu - KSU may be slow to hit a rhythm but don’t bet on that; ISU is a mess and didn’t NT beat WSU last year…

Actually, looking at the schedule next year and realizing Glass will not be directing the football training causes some concern. Even while Gundy was faltering, RG was the constant positive on the program for two decades. Perhaps RG should get any statue.

As per Houston:
Offensive Line: The Cougars prioritized revamping their offensive line, a weak point in the previous season. Key additions include:
Shadre Hurst (Tulane)
Drew Terrill (Miami-Ohio)

Anthony Boswell (Toledo)

Defense: Houston also bolstered its defense with several experienced players:
De’Marion Thomas (Oklahoma State/Vanderbilt), expected to be a day-one starter on the defensive line.
Jaden Yates (Ole Miss), an SEC linebacker addition.
Javion White (Tulane), a safety who recorded 50 tackles and three interceptions in 2025.
Jalen Mayo (Stephen F. Austin), a cornerback who led the Southland Conference in coverage grade.
Other Notable Additions:
Makhi Hughes (Oregon), a running back transfer.
Patrick Overmyer (UTSA), a tight end transfer.

UH lost dual threat qb and highly rated LB that signed with TT…
