I don’t remember Travis Ford getting us 23 regular season wins. ESPN has us as an 8 seed but we could end up a 6 or 7 seed (ah! 6 7!) depending on how we do in the conference tourney. Finished last season with 25 wins and 21 two years before that. Way better than Ford did. We have never been a powerhouse women’s program, not to the degree that we have been on the men’s side. So I’d say so far Hoyt is a winning hire. Not sure anyone could make a case otherwise.
heychamp is a lying, goal post moving piece of garbage.
Hoyt has done a tremendous job but let’s be real about the men’s program, we’ve had two good coaches. That’s it.
Ford was 24-9 in the 2012-13 season and a 5 seed in the tourney. He was 23-12 in the 2008-09 season. 22-11 in the 2009-10 season. 21-13 in the 2013-14 season. He went to the tournament 5 out of his 8 seasons here. His seedings were 5, 7, 8, 9, 9. I am not defending Ford. I wanted him gone as much as anyone. He needed to go, but it wasn’t because he didn’t have decent to good regular seasons, it was his inability to advance in the tournament.
Hoyt seems pretty similar. Yeah, this year will make her 3 out of 4 in tourney appearances, which is good. There is a stretch where Ford made it to the tourney three straight years, though. If we’re just comparing her to the women’s team, it’s also not much different than how Jim Littell started and really pretty par for the course over the last 20 years. Budke started 3 out of 5 tourney appearances with better seedings. Littell was 4 out of 5 tourneys with middling seedings (#5 one year). She’ll start 3 out of 4 with middling seedings (#6 high maybe). Nothing about her tenure jumps off this page to me. I’m not saying she’s bad, but she seems like she’s pretty similar to what we’ve had. Expectations are probably a part of that. She’s meeting the OSU standard that’s been set whereas Ford was measured against Eddie Sutton (and should have been if we wanted to be a serious basketball powerhouse, which I think we did at the time).
Hmmmm but he and others predicted what was going to happen in football. While you came along not even two years ago trying to tell everyone how much of an idiot they were
. During that time, being completely wrong about the coaching process and our NIL budget situation. I don’t even think Robert Allen would take you seriously.
Hey champ,
What did I say about the budget? We’re probably about average in the Big XII. I think a couple of schools definitely have more money than we do. Probably 4 or 5 have less money than we do. Everyone else is probably similarly funded. We brought in some big transfers this year, but we let probably our two best returners walk, we filled in the roster with a lot of G6, FCS guys. We grabbed the top UNT guys, but also the ok UNT guys. It was a good class and a smart use of money, but I think it showed that we do have financial limitations. All I’ve ever said is that we’re not in the league of the wealthy schools: Texas, Ohio State, Oregon… I don’t think we’ll ever have a meaningful shot at a national title again unless financial regulations are put in somehow.
Back in October of 2024 we had this conversation on another forum. You complained about how we don’t have the money that some schools do. I never said that was the issue. In case you don’t remember, I mentioned Curt Cignetti and how he turned Indiana around with a NIL budget similar to ours with a similar situation at the time.
Indiana went on to finish 11-2 with a CFP appearance. I also mentioned how we returned 19 starters and didn’t win a single conference game. I, and others, tried telling you that the NIL budget wasn’t the largest issue. Sometimes you need a competent coach to get it done. It’s been quite obvious in that time that NIL was NOT the common denominator since September 2024.
Even then, we still finished last place the last two seasons. Meaning our NIL budget is not even meeting the expectations of how we should finish in the conference. A 52-0 shellacking at the end of the season should’ve been enough to see our previous HC is a money waster, and didn’t care what happened. That was made even more evidence with the Tulsa loss being the icing on the cake. Even Michael13 (with how much he opposes me) finally admitted that we were right. Maybe you should get on board and stop moving the goal post when it suites you
.
Neither AR, Jeff, or myself have said anything about winning a national title. We’ve always been consistent in that you probably need to win the conference more first. I don’t know where you and others keep getting this idea? You don’t build a program to elite status by never winning your conference. If I’m not mistaken, you’ve made the claim of “I’d rather have consistency and overall winning than being a doormat”. Well….we’re at doormat status. So how can you have national title on your lips when you’ve admittedly told me your content with limitations?
Hey champ,
No one is talking about any of this. Stop hijacking threads. I’m done humoring you. You’re wrong. You’re misrepresenting everything. Just go away. This is a basketball topic.
Key word: “regular” season wins. Ford never won 23 in the regular season. Now, I will say I don’t remember Ford taking us to five NCAA tourneys. That’s better than I remember. But it’s hard to compare that to what Lutz is going up against, as I don’t think the Big 12 was nearly as tough then as it is now.
All this to say, again, that Hoyt, to me, appears to have us at a higher level of success and trending higher than Ford. Whatever. It just would be nice to sniff the tourney on the men’s side.
Well, the tournament seeding is similar, and I would value postseason wins higher than regular season wins anyway, but point taken, I suppose.
Hard to say. Obviously, we added some juggernauts in Houston and Arizona, but the Big XII was always a good basketball conference and you had to play everyone home and home.
Agree with that. I’m to the point where I’d just about rather have a MBB Sweet 16 run than a football conference title. I used to take off work to watch the first round of March Madness every year, but it just doesn’t mean as much when we can’t get in for years on end.
Same. Not sure how old you are but I was in Stillwater during Eddie’s sweet sixteen runs in ‘91 and ‘92, I believe, (had season tickets his first year as HC) as well the ‘95 Final Four run. I was living two hours away during our 2004 run. Plus the elite eight run in 2000 (I think?) was so much fun, and I agree that all those meant more to me than a conference title in football. We had serious national attention and relevance in hoops. I’m sure many here would disagree with the football comparison, but when we were great in hoops, that seemed more meaningful.
The last 20 years has been painful.
I was attending OSU during the '04 run. John Lucas will always be my favorite OSU hooper. When we were down 1 with 20 seconds to go, I always thought we were going to win. The buzz around campus during the Big XII and March Madness tournaments was special, everyone would be gathered in the Student Union on all the TVs watching, and it there was just palpable energy there. I miss it.
- Blamed NIL when it was the coach
- Not even the smallest NIL budget, and still finished last twice in a row
- You were given an example two seasons ago you ignored
- Complained about having North Texas players. Then turning around and saying you think we did a good job. So which one is it?
When you get called out for constantly moving the goal post, or being wrong, then all of a sudden the other party is “wrong”. Can’t wait to see how many times you decide to move it in the future
.
You do know Bill aka Joe is a troll don’t You? He was kicked out trying to honor a bet then came sneaking back in as Bill. He will high jack every thread to go back to bash Gundy program. You and I both know Gundy didn’t want to mess with NIL and suffered for it. That and his ego. I don’t know where we are on NIL money but signing the qb and rb cost a bunch. Overall not a bad group of guys but this isn’t the league they were in. I’m just hoping for a high octane offense this year
You were also the same one trying to tell us he would “fix it” when we kept telling you he wouldn’t. You only decided to change your mind when insurmountable evidence was stacked against you. That’s what happens when you don’t pay attention to both what the guy SAYS and IS DOING. You were blinded by your own biased opinions. I said before the Tulsa game OSU would barely win and that I wouldn’t be surprised if they lost. Maybe you should actually start taking into account what other people are saying
.
Hey champ,
Let’s talk about some netiquette here and why the girls don’t answer your phone calls. Did you just necro a thread from three basketball games ago that you hijacked to complain about a football coach who got fired six months ago? Let’s step back and examine that, bucko.
Those are some big red flags that you’ve got some obsessive tendencies and the ladies don’t like that. You’re mom’s little schmoo bear, and she might just say you’re passionate and intense, but mom’s just trying to rationalize that carrying you in her womb for nine months, caring for and feeding you for 18 long years, and now housing you in her basement for another 20 wasn’t all just some huge mistake and she hasn’t wasted her life on an oxygen thief.
Don’t worry. I’m going to help you (and mom).
1.) For the love of everything good, take a shower. Clean up your empty Mountain Dew bottles. Wash your sheets.
2.) Go outside, touch grass, breathe in some fresh air.
3.) Go look in the mirror and say these things to the man looking back: “Gundy is gone. He can’t hurt me anymore. I am a survivor. I’m not going to make my mental health problems everyone else’s problem.”
That’s a huge reply to make to someone that could care less. Especially when it comes from someone who’s consistently wrong, and actually thinks people care about his opinion
. So who really lives in mommy’s basement here?
Hey champ,
I don’t know. Go upstairs and ask your mom.
He’s a troll, don’t feed the troll. He’s cares so much about getting everyone into arguments because he wants to highjack every thread to Gundy. I don’t believe in blocking people but when he was obviously picked on by every kid in high school he wants to take his frustrations out in a forum that he gets to comment free, he’s a mooch also, Marshal should ban him. He adds nothing, he’s like a cancer bothering people all the time. As you said Gundy is gone but he will continually bring him up next year. I’m sure Gundy also banged his gf at some point. The guy is straight menta
