I been wondering myself, but was thinking anything less than 8-4 he’s getting fired and 8-4 may not be enough depending on factors of how we win and probably how the last couple of games go. This last season I’ve questioned Gundy more than all years combined.
I keep telling people this and they won’t listen. Even if he has a chance to win the conference he’ll just find another way to blow it.
I miss the annual spring game, glad it was brought back. I think he sees the writing on the wall and wants to see what he’s working with in a game setting or measure the team. It’s too late I feel. I can see us with less than 6 wins next season. He should of seen hindsight instead of letting the god complex personality take over. Donors, AD, and Shrum won’t be played any longer nor worried if he’s no longer with the program anymore. They want to win and can get the money for NIL or a hungry coach that knows how to navigate the new landscape of college football. Keep up or get left behind. If re-alignment happens again I’d not like to end up like Washington State or Oregon State. Brands and logos apparently matter in the new landscape, he should had seen that coming. You can still keep some culture with the new and modern times.
I just don’t see an 8-4 season happening. I’m a homer and I WANT us to be good, but if you take an objective look:
Quarterback Room - C. Neutral at best. We’ve seen nothing to grade our talent level at B or higher.
Running backs - C. Again, neutral. Rodney Fields showed some promise last year, but he’s pretty small.
Wide Receivers/Tight Ends - D. Not sure how you can look at what we lost and grade it any higher.
Offensive Line - D. We were not good and all starters are basically gone.
Defensive Line - D. Again, lost some players and those coming back don’t have much of a resume’ to warrant a better grade.
Linebackers - D. Ugh.
Secondary - C. Neutral, which feels too optimistic.
Kicking game - D.
Hoping I am wrong, but just don’t see much. Ready, willing and excited to eat my words.
This is all interesting discussion but in reality trying to predict college football is, IMO, a fools errand. At least past performance by just about everyone supports this notion. The betting sites seem to be the best at it so If you want to hedge your predictions I would look to them.
