'It's Year 7, They Want Results': Boynton Understanding of Fanbase's Disgruntlement about Rough Start

Wow, all these comments and no mention of the albatross prior coaches put on Boyntons back. Loss of scholarships and no post season are huge in basketball. The NCAA did that to us to keep us from being competitive. That’s the whole point, and it worked. Now you all blame Boynton for what Underwood did. You even praised Underwood for bailing to a program without recruiting restrictions.

I am not going to rehash all that but Boynton has held his head high. He still does not have a full team recruited by him, where recruiting was not restricted.

This isn’t all Boynton’s doing. He is suffering through it just like we are. We are not a powerhouse program that can overcome some sanctions. They hit us hard and we are paying the price. To evaluate Boynton in a vacuum of those sanctions is unreasonable and stupid.

I would think our fans are more intelligent than that. Hopefully we will see improvements going forward but I don’t expect Boynton to be a magician.

He has had 7 years. Just sayin’

If the powers that be wanted to give Coach Boynton some additional time due to all the crap OSU basketball went through then I’d be ok with that. Just know that the amount of time left to show success is not infinite. As for Underwood, he is a MF snake in the grass and that is all that I will say about that.

And seven years of NCAA sanctions. Why would we completely ignore that as if it is irrelevant? It is completely relevant and detrimental to our program, as designed by the NCAA. This isn’t that hard.

You’re saying he’s had 7 years of NCAA sanctions? Every year he’s been under sanction? I gotta call foul on that one. I’m not saying it’s been easy but he’s not had sanctions his entire 7 years.

Memo to Coach Mike: we’re getting results.

You’re right, this isn’t that hard.

Free Throw Percentage Rank
22-23 = 275th
21-22 = 317th
20-21 = 178th
19-20 = 93rd
18-19 = 246th
17-18 = 42nd

Shooting Percentage Rank

22-23 = 261st
21-22 = 187th
20-21 = 64th
19-20 = 225th
18-19 = 270th
17-18 = 235th

Now tell me what sanctions have to do with these stats? His teams can’t shoot. They obviously don’t work on it either. Keiton Page could shoot. What is he teaching this team? He’s definitely not teaching shooting. And if we can’t shoot you can’t win. He has had top 25 defenses the past 2 years with nothing to show for. This all falls on the coaches. It’s time for a complete overhaul.

Underwood was a snake though. He had zero character to him then or now

You have 4 years of players on the team. How many of those were recruited while the team was under sanctions? It takes 4 years AFTER sanctions end for a team to be fully recruited free of sanctions. We were sanctioned just LAST year, with no post season play.

That absolutely affects who we could recruit last year. That restricted (and probably sub par) recruiting class will still be having an effect on our team as they move from Freshman to Seniors.

What sanctions have to do with it? When you have restricted recruiting, you get sub par athletes. Then those sub par recruits miss free throws, and shots, and rebounds, and commit turnovers. The good players don’t want to come to a school that has sub par players from years of restricted recruiting. They also don’t come where they can’t go the the post season.

That is how sanctions affect stats like free throw shooting.

Interesting. Let me give you a comparison.

VMI = Virginia Military Institute

They have a D1 basketball program. Now without looking it up, I’d be willing to be that OSU has better recruiting classes even with said sanctions. Here are their free throw rankings.

22-23 = 44th
21-22 = 7th
20-21 = 30th
19-20 = 196th
18-19 = 114th

Remind you that in the last 5-7 years MB has 3 five star recruits and a handful of 4 star recruits. VMI doesn’t get that type of talent. So why would they shoot free throws better? If you can’t see how bad it is idk what to tell you.
