Great takes. Definitely appreciate the nuance on nOt BeAtInG yOuR rIvAl. OU wasn’t in their all-time apex, but they were on the cusp of elite in a 20 year run most schools would envy. As soon as OU regressed after Riley, Gundy won 2 of 3, and if Sanders were healthy, I think it would’ve been 3-0 to cap the rivalry.
I just never get the people who wanted Gundy gone for not beating OU more. Firing your coach for not beating OU enough is expected…if youre Texas. Not OSU. There are reasons that one can argue about why firing Gundy made sense (im sure you and I have likely had that argument), but not beating Bob Stoops enough is a dumb one. Yes, your record against your rival matters. But, not all rivalries are created equal. Bedlam in my generation was absolutely a game that mattered to OU fans. It is definitely a rivalry. That wasnt always the case. Miles/Gundy are responsible for that. It wasnt OU-TX and never will be, but boy it was a game that you marked on your calendar annually. That wasnt always the case. Ive always said that OU-OSU is similar to Michigan-Mich. St. You cant fire a guy for not beating the powerhouse right down the street that has always had better resources. None of that is a slight to OSU.
