I think it’s safe to say Lutz is a bust. I get that it’s his ‘most talented team’ yet, but the NIL era drastically shortens the ‘rebuilding’ timeline to (essentially) one season.

Lutz has only had 1 real year so far. Year 1 he was hired too late in the portal window to obtain enough quality players needed to compete in the Big 12. This past season was a bust though. We will see what happens this season. If we miss the tournament again with this roster I will agree he is a bust. Too early to tell yet in my opinion.

Agreed. It tournament or bust for Lutz. His buyout is currently 5 million.

I think firing Weiberg now would be a mistake. DT and Hoyt were great hires. Morris is quickly starting to look like a home run as well. Jury is still out on Lutz, he needs to show some results this year. If Morris turns out to be a home run like I believe he will be and then we fire Chad at the end of the season who would want this job?

I would love for @CarsonCunningham to talk to his sources, find out anything on this subject, and discuss it on this week’s podcast.

Unless it’s a fundraising issue, I just don’t understand it. 3 out of 4 of his coaching hires have been home runs.

I don’t have nearly enough information or understand the true power structure to begin to have an opinion.

Everyone keeps mentioning these other sports, but nothing else matters besides football. There’s no point pretending, or you risk becoming Arkansas.

This is true, the football hire is what makes or breaks Chad’s AD career. If Morris turns out to be a bad hire Chad will deservedly get fired but we need some time to tell on what Morris amounts to. After what I have seen post T-Day, I think he has the potential to be one of the best hires in OSU history.

Absolutely. Football grossed roughly $57 million in 2024–25 and netted about $24 million. Men’s basketball brought in around $20 million and netted roughly $4 million. Wrestling, the next closest, grossed just $3.1 million and actually operated at a loss.

We need to stop pretending the other sports carry anything close to the financial importance of football. Football is the economic engine of college athletics, especially at Oklahoma State.

When your biggest revenue-producing sport succeeds, it drives more money, attention, donations, ticket sales, and overall interest into the entire athletic department. That’s why getting the football hire right matters so much.

Wow, you sound like the typical Landsquatter fan who thinks easy fixes are easy. :sob: Judge him after the upcoming season…why don’t cha? Or go back to cheering for the LandCheat$. :joy:

I wasn’t a fan of Weiberg at all till he started making moves. Firing Gumby, hiring Taylor, Hoyt, Lutz, and now Morris were all very good moves. Gumby fans looking at what I wrote first: :sob:

Yet zerOU is now pretty much just a gymnastics and softball school. :joy:  :joy_cat:

@bill18 Brother, football is the engine at all schools that have a Div I CFB program!

Could be fundraising. I think The Sports Animal indicated that the coaches for each sport (that isn’t football) have to fundraise to cover their scholarships. That’s shocking.

How much credit are we going to give his hires? He’s been using a consulting firm. Retain the consulting firm and you should be getting the same quality candidate.

Which is an intelligent move on his part.

How dare people use resources available to them to do their job well

No OSU AD has had to navigate anything more complex that Mike Gundy’s termination.

I don’t pretend to know the inner workings of the athletic department, but everything I’ve seen externally from Chad has earned my support.

So what exactly did he do? This is happening all over corporate America as well. People get paid to do jobs and then they contract consultants to do it and take credit for the success or else blame the consultants. Counter my actual point: what makes him an indisposable resource as an AD if the consulting firms are the ones bringing the candidates?

I remember it was said of Joe Castiglione that he had a running list of candidates to replace his coaches at all times, even when we wasn’t expecting to need to. As an AD, there’s no reason you can’t be doing this. Anything the consultants can do, he can do himself or else have his staff do it.

A majority of P4 AD’s use consulting firms for head coach searches.

Sports fans in general, like this post, have become insufferable. Weiberg has done nothing to demonstrate an inability to run the athletic department. Yet, the armchair peanut gallery still manages to disparage him for…wait for it…maybe getting a little credit for some awesome coaching hires because any other AD would have hired the same recruiting service and gotten the same results and thus had almost nothing to do with who actually got hired?

Some real mental pygmies in here.

He got the consulting firm he believed to be the best one before they were no longer available. A lot of schools fired their coach this past year and he put us in the position to get a top firm to assist with the search. I’m not sure if Arkansas waited to long to get a reputable search firm or if their AD is just flat out incompetent but they did not use a search firm. Now they have hired a bum coach that didn’t do anything with the massive resource advantage they have over the watered down AAC while we have what is looking to be one of the best young up and coming head coaches at the power 4 level.
