I’d say a 59-13 blowout of the FCS National runner-up is a little more telling than a team that had 20 points against UT-Martin going into the fourth quarter.

The facts are Gundy knows he can’t look successful unless he’s avoiding competition. You can make a bowl most years if you avoid power 4 teams in non conference and if you do play power 4, make it the historical worst team in the conference.

No lies detected, I believe it had more to do with the use of “They spend Alot of money” in lieu of anything derogatory.
Now it almost seems like thats the first excuse out Gundy’s mouth if we get the brakes beat off us. JS.

Yeah… except he was like oh, we spend big because we’re dedicated to winning. No, you spend big because you have a ridiculously rich donor. Yeah, we used to have one too, but it has only a little bit to do with being dedicated. The only people that have to be “dedicated” are your wealthy shoe mogul and the handful of guys in the athletic department willing to gladhand him and kiss his butt. It says nothing about the school or the dedication of the fanbase at large. Some people just have more money available to them.
Now, I don’t know if our donors are giving what we can or not. $7 million over 3 years seems pretty low, but I really don’t know how many megadonors we have or don’t have, and I’ve heard that number has gone up this year, so probably, we weren’t.

I would agree with that, for the most part. OSU isnt CHOOSING to spend X amount as opposed to Y amount. I agree with that.
I just get annoyed at two guys basically saying the same thing, basically stating the truth…but its a 180 degree turn on how its taken simply based on the fan base who is reading it.
Right. The only part I took exception at was the implication that the money level was somehow indicative of their dedication. It’s luck. We’re going to see Alabama slide out of the elite tier more than likely. I just don’t know if they have that money pipeline to keep up. I think their alums are plenty passionate, so I don’t think their NIL collective fundraising is a source of shame, it’s just mostly circumstance that they aren’t in the top 10. You’re still going to need good coaching and a good AD and all of that to win, but there’s a buy-in to be paid to even be at the table and get to a competitive starting point.
Agree. The issue I have is the lazy excuse from some programs of “we dont have enough money”. OU went 6-7 and it wasnt because of not having enough money. OSU went 0-9 in Conf and it wasnt because of money. Dan Lanning is a ■■■■ good coach and it isnt because of Oregons NIL. Does an open checkbook make it easier? Of course. But ASU won the Big 12 without being a “have”. NIL plays a factor, without a doubt. But the point spread this week in Eugene is 28pts because of many things not involving NIL. OSU just outbid OU for a few HS recruits. OSU paid Ollie Gordon pretty well. The excuse of some programs by saying team X wins more than team Y due to NIL is lazy.
Alabama plays the game too. Dont get that twisted at all. They just dont do it to the level of Ohio St and LSU becuase they didnt they had to. They will.
Yeah, A&M has tons of money, but they haven’t been able to do anything with it. Same with USC. Being smart with your money and good coaching is still important, but until the landscape shifts again, I doubt we’ll see a team outside the top ten in NIL win a national championship. Certainly not outside the top 20. There are conference titles and playoff berths and playoff runs that will be nice consolation prizes, but the Texases and Ohio States are going to be dominant.

When was the time in which anyone else was winning those outside of the big boys anyway? Washington in 91? GaTech in 90? Go look at who has won these titles before NIL. Its the same people. Id guess Miami in 2001 wouldnt be considered a monetary blueblood…but they are definitely a “have”. The method by which people acquire the players has been altered. But its still the same people. Go look back at the Nat title games or who was in the running the last 30 years. OSU in 2011, but it was LSU-Bama.
Yeah, Miami was the last one. However, people have gotten in the mix and gotten close since then. TCU. Oklahoma State.
I get that parity doesn’t exist. Generally, instability favors the bigger institutions just like it does in business, but there are changes that aim for parity (scholarship limits) and some that clearly favor the established powers (unregulated NIL) intentionally or otherwise.
Yeah I dont disagree. But people have always gotten into the conversation (playoff/“mix”). The method has changed. The result has not. I think the Conf realignment, combined with the portal/NIL have created the perfect storm for the OSU’s of the world.
Yea I took that comment as very disrespectful. Hinting that we lack something like intelligence or dedication to spend the money needed to win while we all know why Oregon spends big. I never paid much attention to Oregon or their fans but the rhetoric coming from their coaches and fans over this game on Saturday tell me that they are mostly pretentious aholes. Sorta like Baylor fans back in the Briles era.
