Abshire had 1,057 yards and 13 touchdowns as a sophomore this past season.
How many of our portal transfers have been from lower echelon schools? How can we expect to compete any more if that is the best we can afford to pay?
Well Johnson was the reason we were in quite a few games the year we burned his redshirt . And he got his chance on an NFL tryout .
IF he’d had another year…
From my count about 15 of the 26 portal commitments are from Non-P5 schools. Some of the P5 commitments couldn’t get on the field where they came from as well. Of course, I couldn’t tell you what kind of an impact those lower echelon schools are releasing to us. As it would take a significant amount of time to research it.
It’s really just a giant question mark at this point. I’m not sure how much juice a couple of previously fired 60 year old coordinators have left in them. Based on what I’ve seen from the past it doesn’t seem to matter if we’re returning a specific amount of starters or not. You could go 9-3, then turn around and go 3-9 the next season.
What I don’t hope happens is that we play musical chairs with our quarterbacks, and hope we actually have someone with a consistent track record with evaluation experience. I don’t want to wait halfway until the seasons done to try and figure out our offensive woes like we have the past three seasons.
Yes, Leon Johnson III was a very solid receiver. It would have been nice to get one more year. He could have been great.
I don’t get the lamentation over pulling from “non-P4” schools. This has become the norm in college hoops. The best programs are pulling up mid-majors that have established themselves. Some teams aren’t even recruiting out of high school anymore.
You’re talking about a DII All-American. That’s got to at least be a good depth piece. You aren’t just recruiting starters, but maybe he could end up being one. Lots of quality players fall through the cracks. The list of great NFL players from smaller schools or who didn’t get many offers out of high school are vast. Prestigious football high schools get, reasonably, the bulk of people’s attention. 6A more than 5A and on down. Some people are good athletes or have great work ethic but their parents aren’t relocating their entire lives around their child’s longshot athletic aspirations.
I would agree. However, that all depends if you have other solid pieces in place for him. If you don’t have a QB that can get him the ball, or an OL to open holes for the running game it’s all useless.
If we can’t run the ball against a four man front all the other team is going to do is play more coverage. If we have a QB that constantly throws interceptions or doesn’t have good mobility they aren’t going to take much risk in going after him.
I’m not sold on Meacham yet. However, I do think it’s an upgrade from the clown that was running our offense for the last five years. So there’s that.
