I can’t imagine the trolls would pay to troll, but it would definitely be more humorous if they were. I’d assume article comments would be separate from PFB+.
You’re superstition is awesome… cause now you got me thinking!
Gonna utilize the OT part of the SWOT analysis here:
Opportunities to closing down the comments:
More PFB+ memberships
Les of a mess on the articles (yes the Les was intentional)
Threats to closing down the comments:
Impact to PFB traffic (maybe people just want to state there opinions for free and like the dialogue associated, also people may view the articles as helpful but think there is more info they have to pay for and then you lose that visit all together)
As mentioned by others, The Chamber loses its nostalgia by being over run by people who will probably see suspensions and could also lead to waaaaay too many threads about random things. It could just lead to the comment section we all paid to avoid (or at least I did)
Lol you’d be surprised.
I really wouldn’t care either way tbh.
As long as they strike the right tone with suspensions. (Props the PFB guys, the first two were needed, a touch slow for my taste but needed. It’s also hilarious it came with real consequences cause Cade committed while on their vacation.)
It tough to hand them out to someone who’s paying a good chunk of money, but you have to protect the board as well.
Not sure I like the idea. Would there be closed PFB+ and open PFB threads? Would the threads have anything to do with the articles (assuming not). I generally like the shorter article-centric threads on regular comments section rather than the never-ending threads in the Chamber, but I do like the cleaner environment over here and the progress we’ve made with setting the tone. Not the end of the world if you do make the change of course.
Oh god, please don’t let OrangeTuono into the Chamber. No no no no no…that person made the GoPokes forum toxic.
The fake Les Miles is pretty hilarious, you have to admit. He maintains the act pretty well.
Comments section is a terrible look for the blog honestly. I’d close it up since we have the forum now.
He wouldn’t last here.
My thing is that I don’t think people should be able to post without at least a first name. I’m not saying post their social security number but username Bob is less likely to troll than whatever stupid Kyle Boone troll name somebody comes up with. People act way more civil when you know their name considering most are likely alums.
Less likely but not impossible. Richard Kennedy is happily putting his asinine thoughts out there under his own name.
Given you need views and clicks I’d pose this question on the home page. If you shut down comments and lose 30% of your visitors what was the point. The people already here have shown some level of commitment you have to run them off the others are your bread and butter and probably far more fickle.
Is there a cost ($) or efficiency burden to maintaining both? Are you betting on a revenue boost by consolidation? Unless you got clear answers then ?
Here’s my thinking …
I’m with @Dribble in that the comments are kind of a bad look. It makes us look more blogg-y than we actually are at this point. On the other hand, the Chamber is a great look. It’s partitioned off well and like all of you have mentioned, it’s a great place for good convo.
Also, the more people in the Chamber, the better. I’m not super concerned about ad revenue from the Chamber, but I think getting people in here gets them curious about Cade news and stuff we talk about in the + part. I am concerned about subs because it’s what the future of the entire site rests on so I think the decision for me is about pushing more toward that and consolidating in a way that helps with that.
I think that’s totally fair, but if you do decide to move to everyone to The Chamber, may I suggest a more clearly-defined suspension/banning system? Sort of a three-strikes thing with one strike being a warning via direct message, two being a 48-hour ban like we have seen here, and three being a permanent ban. Or something like that. For some of us, like myself, the warning was enough and we changed. For others, like those mentioned in the OP, a suspension was needed, which will hopefully affect change as well.
I just don’t want this place to turn into another version of the comment section, complete with the toxicity it brings.
Just run a tight ship on modding. r/CFB does it and they are highly successful. Nobody is entitled to posting here. In fact, with the info I’ve seen in the past month it should be more of a privilege.
I like reading (some of) the comments directly after and relating to the article. I don’t know that I would click over here to see what the comments are about a specific article. How would that work?
But I agree that some of the comments give a bad look to PFB and OSU fans in general. I wonder if you could institute some kind of a warning/ban to certain posters over on the comments??? But maybe that’s not possible if they’re signed up through Discus?? I’m not sure the mechanics of how the name registry/accounts works over on the blog. The usedtobe cowboy fan or whatever his/her name is is obviously a troll, and a most obnoxious one at that.
Preach.
Just out of curiosity and in reading through The Chamber it looks like a number of you (perhaps even the guys who run this site) are active on other sites. Do you use your name on those sites, I used to have a sub to 24/7 didn’t use my name there either and didn’t see many who did. Don’t follow any other sites so I have no idea on how common the practice is, I’m just wondering out loud, so to speak.
I go by The Head Chimp on sbnation.com as well.
I slowed my visits to PFB and avoided certain types of articles over the last few years due to the comments section, which bummed me out because I’ve been following since the beginning. Seems to just be filled with hate and anger more than anything. Who would have thought Nate wouldn’t be the worst we would see all those years ago.
Personally was a big fan of the Nate comment section era lol
