‘Tears Were Shed’: Eric Morris Unlocked Sean Brophy’s Coaching Potential by Benching Him as a Player
‘Coach, I’m gonna come work for you.’ And I said, ‘Well, I don’t have a job for you.’ ‘Alright, I’ll be there next week.’ —

“We had a true freshman come in and gave us a chance to be a little more mobile. The first time I had a sit-down with Sean was to tell him he wasn’t the starting quarterback a couple weeks before his senior season. I think there are a lot of tears shed in that.”
Gundy would’ve chosen seniority over talent. I already like this guy. Not afraid to start younger more talented players over average seniority.
Yep. We saw that in the choice of Corndog over the freshman Sanders. And it cost us a year of development and experience with Sanders. We also saw it in how slow he was to give Ollie his chance to be the lead back.
Let’s not forget Justin Blackmon. That had barely any stats and went on to win the biletnikoff two years in a row. A first round draft pick. Hubert Anyiam was supposedly a better option
.
Let’s not forget handicapping ourselves in Bedlam 2009 with a Zac Robinson and his busted shoulder. Despite the fact a future first round pick was sitting right behind him. That had proven earlier in the season he could move the offense if needed
.
Seniority over talent definitely had its moments where it kept us down to the level of our competition or worse.
Nice to have new blood it is. It’s going to be a fun year. Pretty sure we won’t be sweating the non conference games out and dropping one.
Corndog was better than Sanders! ![]()
Certainly that year he was.
