The OSU Problem: Why Minnesota is Behind Bama in the CFP Rankings

Well, make no mistake, it’d be nice for the Big 10 to produce a great team other than Ohio State. I’d love to see it happen.

You know, honestly, looking at all of the other 1-loss teams, I can’t really find a win that’s better than Minnesota’s PSU win. Georgia is really the only 1-loss team I would currently go with.

However, if you look at PSU, they beat two ranked teams in a row (Iowa and Michigan). That’s good. They’ve still got Ohio State to prove something against (which they will probably fail to do, but who knows?).

Meh, they only have to split with Iowa and Wisconsin to make the championship, and would still have to beat Ohio State or Penn State in the CCG. I’d take them as a 1 loss Conference Champ. Seems like they’d most likely still have a strong resume vs other 1 loss teams.

Last I checked the winning percentage of an undefeated team is better than the winning percentage of a 1 loss team. That’s all that matters. I’ll say this again: it is the only thing that matters.

If it’s all about blue bloods and name recognition, then why is Utah ranked ahead of Minnesota?

The problem is more about preseason rankings influencing the entire season. The media ranked Utah high in the preseason giving them a better starting position. Nobody had Minnesota (or baylor) in the preseason rankings, so they had more work to be done if the want to climb into the top 4.

Do away with preseason rankings and this isn’t a problem.

Also true, and I thought about this. But you kind of answered your own question. Or I should say, swept aside the reason for the preseason rankings, in the first place. But yes, it would be nice to enter the season without any sort of artificial expectations created by preseason rankings.

Edit: What do you do when everyone wins? How do you handle Week 1 rankings? Or do you wait until after Week 8 and issue the first playoff rankings?

I would wait until the playoff rankings.

That would be great, but psychologically would probably have an unusual effect on not only the teams, but fans as well.

Also, what are you going to do? Make it illegal for the AP to create content?

This is one of my biggest pet peeves with my favorite sport. The “preseason” rankings are the stupidest thing ever. Especially when in week 8 all the talking heads start saying, “Well it should be about what they’ve done THIS season…”

Well then why the hell did you support/condone ranking the teams before anyone stepped on a field in the first place!?

It really pisses me off when we start talking about how many ranked wins Ohio State (or whoever, but its usually Ohio State) has in the later weeks of the season. Well of course they had 50 ranked wins because every no-name Iowa big10 school was freakin ranked before the season even started!?
