We get it, Mike, but don’t understand why bringing that up unless to have an excuse if we get Rick rolled. NIL is way out of hand, but complaining about it isn’t going to change it. We might need an act of Congress. It’s full blown professionalism and not what college sports should be about. I find it hard to believe Nike is giving Oregone that much per year to sign players….Phil Knight isn’t THAT rich. Texas Tech oil guys who are giving them ducat$ to their alma mater have a lot more than Knight.
I don’t know Knight has very deep pockets, I guess Tech oil man has as big or bigger. It’s a shame we don’t have another Boone 2.0 around to help. Congress did pass a bill just a few weeks ago. Don’t know exactly what the revenue sharing will be but I think I saw that each P4 school will receive 20 million or so.
Gundy needs to let it go until they put a limit to what you can pay for football. Tech has the commit from the 5 star kid that was reported 5.3 million for 3 years which is crazy to me Crazy money being paid for sports.
Dude seems more worried about NIL than his 0-9 conference record from last season with a veteran team. His head isn’t in the right place. We need a new face in Stillwater quickly.
Phil Knight and his family are like the 60th wealthiest people in the world. Tech’s guy couldn’t hold Phil’s jockstrap.
And Phil is in his twilight years. Oregon will be getting a ton of that money.
Yea you might want to think again. In 2025 alone Mr Knight gave $2 billion to the Oregon Health & Science Cancer Institute. His net worth is around 35 billion. I’d say he has the resources to give Oregon football a decent amount of NIL money.
The way I see it HCMG is just pointing out the huge imbalances that exist and will continue to exist unless something is done. Someone needs to say it out loud and HCMG has the platform to do it so good for him. Bottom line though the imbalances are real and they have a significant effect on outcomes. That is the reality no matter ones attitude or mindset.
Were you or HCMG pointing out the huge imbalances that exist when the Cowboys played UT Martin last week? Is it an advantage for Oregon? Absolutely. Is it something that id be saying in the presser the week im playing them? Of course not. Gundy sounds like a defeated coach already.
The imbalance in historically normal non conference games is well known and understood. These games are played for reasons that benefit both schools. As a former D1 player and college sports fan you should know that. Large imbalance’s at the power 4 level are different. Being a blue blood already puts those that are not at a disadvantage. Not much can be done about that. However adding a significant funding advantage to certain teams is setting a new high for the spread between the have’s and have not’s and is something that can be fixed. So if it can be and should be fixed then people need to speak up about it every chance they get. People like HCMG have a way better chance of getting the attention of those who can fix the problem than us regular sports fans so I applaud him bringing it up.
Gundy’s always been someone who whines about playing competition. He threatened to quit last time. He hasn’t changed.
“The imbalance in historically normal non conference games is well known and understood. These games are played for reasons that benefit both schools” Agree. OSU-UT Martin benefits both schools. OSU-FSU benefits both schools. OU-UM benefits both schools. OSU-Oregon benefits both schools.
“Large imbalance’s at the power 4 level are different” From a “large imbalance” standpoint, you are incorrect. UT Martin cant compete with OSU from any standpoint. Oklahoma St is much closer to being “competitive” from a monetary standpoint with Oregon than UT Martin is to being with OSU. Listen….I hate how NIL is set up. I get Gundys basis. I get yours as well. But you cant have it both ways. You cant say Oregon and OSU should be in different divisions based on budgets when you just played UT Martin last week.
“Being a blue blood already puts those that are not at a disadvantage.” That has always been the case. NIL hasnt chagned that. One could argue that NIL has allowed MORE programs to jump into the conversation (Ole Miss, Texas Tech, Miami, UCLA, etc). Again….I dont like it. But for Gundy to say that is pretty weak, in my opinion.
“As a former D1 player” You dont want to even get into the budgetary discrepancies when it comes to baseball. Again, the OSU football program is FAR better funded than other entities across the D-1 landscape
Listen, im not a fan of how the landscape has changed. But I think Lanning is 100% correct in that some people use that as a crutch or an excuse. Gundy definitely sounds like one of those guys.
Dan Lanning fires back at Mike Gundy’s comments about Oregon’s NIL budget, claiming that it is an excuse for losing.
Would the result be different before NIL?
Nope
