Keep an eye on Michigan State these next couple of years.
Good content but so much left out on recruiting. That alone could be a couple of articles.
Dantonio has the opposite view of Gundy on recruiting and he is the perfect example to many (not me) why Gundy should keep his current approach. No only has MSU had several player scandal related issues under MD he continued to have coaches pursue recruits with serious red flags and attempted to gloss over valid concerns to get those guys. MSU has current litigation from a previous assistant coach implying he was scapegoated by MD when the administration finally began looking into MD recruiting methods. As much as Gundy’s approach is lacking IMO I still wouldn’t trade it for how MSU operated under MD.
I don’t see MSU having less success. Even with 9 game conference schedule winning 7-9 games per year should be achievable IMO. The major difference I see is MSU didn’t settle and at the end of the day they got their guy. Not so much with bringing back Monken to oSu. Just last year when Monken took the Browns OC job most oSu fans were given the impression if Monken came back to college he would be in Stillwater. Then when his daughter enrolled it seemed like a great fit. Instead another story that dies with a whimper. To this day I have only heard speculation on why MY left, SG left, or why TM didn’t return.
Gundy could be here 10 more years with OSU having no way to move on. The only way Gundy is going to beat OU is if they give it to him like in 2014. Everyone seems to be worried if another coach can have success but he averages 4 in a ten team conference. He has won 1 conference title in 15 years. Kansas dominates the conference in basketball much more than OU does in football but if Boynton wins the conference 1 time in 15 years and averages 4th, I don’t think he should be the tenth highest paid coach in the country and I don’t think that’s a success. Boynton does need to learn to schedule lower quality teams in non conference to pad his wins.
Tucker pulled a Dirk Koetter on Colorado…Pretty slimy.
Michigan State didn’t recruit much better than OSU prior to getting to the CFP. The shellacking made them realize they had to try to do so, and the results was scandal. It is the catch-22 of “recruit better” it often means cheat or take on a ton of character risk.
Sadly, the best case scenario is for OU and Texas to both be in at least a temporary decline we can pounce on and build from.
I don’t think that is the case and Gundy is a good example of not needing to cheat. IMO the reason Gundy doesn’t do better in recruiting is he doesn’t put in the hours to build relationships with recruits, struggles to sell his program to recruits relative to his peers, doesn’t extend enough offers to sign top 25 classes, and often doesn’t sign the maximum number of recruits allowed. oSu needs more 3 star players in the program first and foremost IMO. Get more of those and IMO oSu becomes more attractive to 4-5 star recruits. If oSu has 80-85 scholarship players at 3 star or greater I think it would win more games. Getting drilled at Texas Tech last year IMO exposed Gundy’s current approach as flawed.
