On Bowman’s benching, a horrible offense and more
Thank you for giving us a nice essay on why Kasey Dunn should be fired this evening.
How can your offense be as bad as nearly the 2014 offense when you’ve returned all your offensive production?
Cause your HC stupidly and stubbornly returned the OC and OL coach.
The defense was amazing to hold Utah down for that many plays. Not exactly a rousing point to make that the good news is the offense can’t be that bad again……. Start the fire the entire coaching staff now demands and let Doug Gottleib coach the rest of the season as an interim coach……
I’m almost convinced that Alex Grinch would make a better OC than Kasey Dunn.
There’s no overreaction, this was a diarreah show front to back. This game was circled in the Spring and they just pooped their pants. Simple as that. There are no positives to take from this faceplant.
Gundy is 20 years on the job and what do we have to show for it, really?
Some fans were surprised about the beating that the Pokes took, other fans predicted the outcome. I don’t know who to blame when going into the season we knew the weak areas. QB who has been described as mediocre, inconsistent, not good enough.Gundy in past years has said a team is only as good as it’s QB. So that is the main reason for the diaster on offense. Bowman has been consistently inconsistent.
O-line that has played with a lot of guys injured. O-line that this season can’t create space for Ollie. Great receivers wasted because our QB is not good. Bowman singlehandedly lost this game. Utah was the superior team, but we could have won the game if not for horrible QB play. Rengel will transfer. It will be Flores next season or a QB from the portal. We know Dunn sucks, but what about Dickey? Kudos to the defense for playing to their potential today. It’s encouraging going forward.
Immediately, I see no blocking, Bowman throwing off his backfoot into the stands, into the dirt, and into the defenders. No creativity for getting Ollie outside or in the pass game. No intensity. No innovation. No twists to keep the defense honest. We just got our butts beat. Again.
Defense was actually good except for the long QB run and the missed tackles on the long RB run, but we still saw guys so open no one was within 10 yards of them, with a freshman QB.
Missing field goals. 3 and outs. Kickoffs out of bounds. Rollout play calls when there is no pressure on the pocket. Throws in the dirt. Dropped passes. No running holes. No discipline. A Gundy team.
My 10 thoughts:
- Experience on the line clearly does not indicate talent (fire Dickey, can’t recruit or coach).
- This offense has no recognizable scheme. It’s like watching a 12 year old play NCAA25 and just run the same 5 plays over and over with the token reverse thrown in at the absolute worst moment.
- Defense is getting better maybe?
- Maybe Flores is not good? Not sure how else to explain that he can’t get minutes over what we saw yesterday (or maybe Gundy still hates good quarterbacks and only plays them when he has no other choice).
- Nice to see a good crowd on TV!
- FIRE KASEY DUNN
- FIRE KASEY DUNN
- FIRE KASEY DUNN
- FIRE KASEY DUNN
- FIRE KASEY DUNN
The problem for the QBs is I don’t think any of the 3 are good enough to overcome the ineptitude of our OC.
While the defense looked better, its worth noting that it was against a freshman backup QB. They still gave up 250 yards rushing and a career high rushing total to Utah’s running back. So I’m not really sure the defense played great. They were just so much better than our offensive performance, that they kind of get a pass this week.
I really hate to say this, but you’re drinking the orange Kool-Aid while looking through orange-colored glasses if you really think we have a decent chance to win on the road against Kansas State. We beat a couple of mediocre teams and a bad team to start the season. Now, the weaknesses are exposed. The experience and ability of the players didn’t just suddenly evaporate. It’s coaching. It’s always been coaching. Dunn needs to go and Nardo should be right behind him unless he shows significant improvement this year. But, that won’t happen - and that’s the entire issue.
Yeah, he probably should’ve fired the OC and OL coach after we had the Doak Walker winner and went to the conference championship. How would you justify that to anyone? We exceeded expectations this season. Consequently, you’re all fired. We should’ve exceeded them even more.
Can we also retire the Gundy-ism about how defenses are loading the box and stifling our ability to run the ball this year? As if teams in November last year didn’t know about Ollie…
Our defense was overloading the box for a lot of that game and Utah had no problem running the ball effectively with a true freshman QB. If Rising was playing, the loss is probably more like 3+ scores.
Man, then why does literally every journalist and analyst who watched the game say they did a good job? Could it be that they defended 42 minutes of game time on a 150 degree field and held the opposing team to 22 points? They were great on 3rd down (not as good on 4th). They forced three turnovers. They did enough to win the game. If the offense have given them anything, we’d be talking about their dominance. Ok, backup QB, but he is a QB with some pedigree and probably better than say, Tulsa’s QB.
They both should’ve been fired 2+ years ago. If Gundy had fired them even after the Doak, that’s fine. He clearly doesn’t feel he owes any explanation or justification for his decisions, so why does that matter?
Because they’re human beings and it would be completely unfair to fire them after a good season. Fine, fire them two years ago. There were rumors swirling that Gundy was going to fire them. For whatever reason, he didn’t. We don’t know what happened. Whatever happened, they rewarded him last season for not cutting them, and this season isn’t over.
It was an ugly game, but at the end of the day, this was the hardest game on our schedule and we lost by 3. Maybe we’ll still get where we want to go. Lots of season left. Maybe we’ll lose two games we shouldn’t and it will be a disaster season. I know one thing, though, if the offense does turn around, no one calling for people to get fired will admit they were wrong or praise them for the turnaround.
2. Worst Offensive Outing Since When?
For long stretches of this game, it felt as if the Cowboys were going to gain less than 200 yards of total offense for the first time since 2014 — so much so that I went and found that stat.
208 yards on September 16, 2023. Funny it seems like last year.
At least we weren’t out-coached and out-schemed;-)
