‘I thought to myself, man, like that’s pretty gutsy for you to sit here and show me everything that I’m doing wrong,’
Man, if OSU women’s BB has a great year, better back up the truck for Hoyt.
This team is stacked. We will score a lot of points and have better 3 point shooting. Now the defense needs to step up and take up to the promised land.
Why are we spending money on non-revenue sports? Like, I hope they excel, but I’m probably not tuning in for this.
Because it is the right thing to do and it is the law. Go Cowgirls. If they gel, this team can compete with the big programs. I am predicting a sweet sixteen maybe more depending upon the seeding.
I know legally why the university fields a team. Right thing to is a huge stretch for me, though. Anyway, I know why the university does it, I don’t know why we’re putting NIL money into the women’s BB portal, though. There is no return on that investment.
I disagree. Not all returns on investments are tangible. Program notoriety. Are you telling me places like Tennessee and UConn don’t get anything back?
Why not try to field the best team possible? It’s a real downer attitude to say we should just be whatever. Hoping the girls from our team and program don’t read posts like these.
The same reason I don’t have the fastest car. It’s not worth the money, I have other more important priorities to spend my money on, and I don’t get anything out of it because it’s not like I can race it around anyway.
Several problems with your analogy.
First, a personal sports car does nothing for anyone except your own psyche. A women’s college hoops team might do something for the entire program besides themselves, as I wrote.
Second, when I wrote “the best team possible”, I didn’t necessarily mean a team they could barely afford. Do you know how much women’s hoops has in NIL money to spend, how much would be pushing that limit, or how much they actually spent? Of course you don’t.
A college sports program balancing the budget of NIL money amongst the myriad of sports teams is no easy prospect. You may think women’s basketball isn’t that important. Someone else might think that men’s wrestling or golf falls into the same category. Kind of insulting of you to lop the women’s hoops program into a category of wasteful spending.
No, it’s by definition wasteful because it doesn’t produce money. Businesses will throw money into PR, but that’s still ultimately with the goal of that good press making them money in some other way. This is just PR. Trying to get a non-revenue team that contends for a title for a little more buzz, but people do not watch women’s sports in big numbers. I don’t know how much they spent, but if they have the #1 portal class, probably more than most anybody else. Seems like that would be tough to recoup.
I don’t think it’s a “law” per se, hah hah. But I hope the ladies whoop tail! Softball too. Most college sports are non-rev. Does men’s b.ball turn a profit? Wrestling? You’d think those two do, but it’s not true for all men’s b.ball programs around the country, most wrestling programs are in the red…
Football likely funds Tenny’s women’s b.ball team, UConn probably not so much. They are a women’s b.ball school. ![]()
Look up title IX. It is the law for women’s sports to have funding and equality.
College sports have developed into a money maker. Most college sports started out as clubs over 100 years ago.
IMHO, money (NIL) is ruining sports. These players are getting a free education and many are making millions and transfer to higher paying programs. It is disgusting.
So you don’t know how college athletics are funded (whether internal or via NIL), you have a narrow view of how businesses invest in marketing, and you aren’t going to watch the Cowgirls kick butt. That is a lot to take in champ
Most schools make money on sports ? I don’t think that is a true statement. We don’t fund like many schools. Majority of schools football is the bread winner. We made money in men’s basketball when Eddie was here. Now you can throw a rock and not be afraid of hitting anyone Wrestling will make money of break even this year will be a sell out even match. Women’s bball will be better if they win. Baseball I’m not even going into
What are you talking about? I know NIL doesn’t fund the sport except player “salaries,” but the athletics department is coordinating with the donors on where to put that money.
My view is that you need to be making more from your marketing than you’re spending. Women’s basketball loses $2M-$3M a year at OSU. On top of that, you’re now pouring your limited NIL resources into it to get the top portal class. It’s got to be at least $2M-$3M in donor investment that we could be spent on a revenue sport. How is women’s basketball going to generate $4M-$6M in value?
Correction, no one is going to watch the Cowgirls kick butt, this is why they lose $2M in revenue. If I were in the minority and not the overwhelming majority, they would make money. Hope that helps you take it all in.
You don’t think that the womens team will sell out most games if they are winning and one of the top 10 teams in the country? How is not that worth it. The bottom line is that you are not into womens sports but many people are. Just look at whats happening in the WNBA now.
The WNBA is still subsidized by the NBA and it actively hates the only star that’s buoying the league. If Cowgirls basketball sells out games (it probably won’t), it will still lose money, just less money. OU softball is a dynasty and sells out games frequently. They lose millions of dollars a year.
“But many people are,” acting like I’m the outlier. No. People that support it are the outliers. The money proves that. They support football and men’s basketball.
Come on , women’s BB is so saturated with NBA money. They are the one that keeps them going despite losing millions every year. No one watches it. I’m a fan of all Cowboy and Cowgirls sports too
