It had been 1,023 days since Alan Bowman played a full football game.
Look at the basics: Bowman is a pocket passer. To be successful that requires a descent OL. We don’t have a descent OL. When he starts moving around in the pocket he loses his accuracy. If he rolls out he really loses his accuracy. He has the additional burden of having an OC who is not a good play caller. Every time a play was called for Bowman to roll out to either side it was a waste…a 17 yard loss on one play comes to mind. Usually he was busy running for his life and didn’t have a chance to run through all of his options. Maybe not always Bowman’s fault, but still the result was not pretty. Either Gunner or Rengal are more mobile options and probably more accurate when on the run.
Bowman is the least mobile and least accurate QB on the roster, yet flushes immediately. He stepped into the pocket less than 5 times during the game. The OLine wasn’t all that bad, yet Bowman made them look horrible.
He “sounded” cute in the post game making excuses for his poor reads and horrific accuracy by “smartly” throwing the ball away. Presley wasted his time on the field as he was open most plays, yet Bowman targeted him maybe 5 times.
Instead Bowman chose NFL highlight deep balls into coverage contested by soon to be NFL corners. Most of his deep balls were so inaccurate as to be uncatchable.
Bowman interviews well - he’s a real media darling - but his accuracy, mobile, and reads leave a lot to be desired. Bowman’s strongest attribute is his “spokesmanship”. Just count the number of times he named the ISU corners.
Shame on Dunn/Gundy for wasting the snaps on Bowman instead of playing Rangel or Gunnar.
Also expected a tape review given the article’s title, when in reality it was just simply a ChatGPT wrapper on the stat sheet.
Boman seems he deeper from the OL than the other two. He flushes almost immediately, I think the nightmares of injuries from Tech creep in real fast, he’s afraid of getting hurt. He’s not going to get caught up in the pocket getting creamed He certainly doesn’t have the wheels of the other two and they can’t read the field
Tim14, everything you said is exactly right. Bowman is a very good pocket passer but, as you pointed out, he needs a stable pocket and our OL can’t provide that. The frustrating thing is that we kept hearing that our OL was going to be better this year. This quote from The Waterboy is appropriate. “Oh no! We suck again!”
Garret Rangel is the best QB on the roster. We don’t need a breakdown of something we already know.
I’m not sure what happened to Rangel after the first game, but I was most impressed with him. He definitely hasn’t received much love since that game.
