The Weatherford product picks OU.
His loss
Wasn’t a surprise…. Money
I really thought gundy would seal the deal. Shocked wow.
Sooner going 6 and 6 this year
I hope it’s not even that many wins.
The ol “the guy chased the money”…even though he and his family have been life-long Sooner fans, is trained by a former OU player, played AAU hoops with a former OU player as his coach, his pastor in Weatherford is married to a former OU player, and two former Weatherford alums recently played at OU who are close friends with the family. Add to it that OU doesnt give NIL to recruits…the term “money” is a little off base.
Uo doesn’t give money to recruits?
Thanks for my morning chuckle.
@jt12 Indulge me here……what is the process by which you feel OU gives money to recruits? I LOVE the narrative of OU beat OSU on an in-state recruit due to money:joy:
I doubt that was the only reason (or even a reason) he made his choice. But I understood you to say ou doesn’t pay players. Which I found comical.
What I said was OU doesn’t pay/NIL to recruits. OU does have NIL opportunities to guys that are on scholarship. But “paying” recruits……is nothing more than a myth.
There are schools that use NIL/$$ to get recruits. It’s a handful of schools & OU under Venables is not one of them.
Nothing mythical about it. It’s been happening for years. But, I guess it doesn’t matter much anymore anyway as paying kids is legal now.
OU doesn’t give money to recruits. Money/NIL had nothing to do with Nickson committing to OU.
I figure all things being equal this kid would pick OU over OSU. No issue with that at all. However, I want some of what you are smoking if you honestly believe that OU is not making financial promises to recruits. Maybe he’s not being handed a signing bonus but you can bet he knows what his financial outlook is for each school that is recruiting him. That’s not a slam on OU either. It’s just fact.
“Financial promises”……that’s an extremely broad statement. The statement by the initial post was that OU won this recruitment due to this player chasing money. Insinuating that he was/is getting paid. It’s all fun & typical for someone nowadays to accuse your rival of tossing money to a player. If you think that’s how OU under Venables is recruiting, then you’re just uninformed. If you think CJ or his family had one single conversation involving money when his school of choice was being discussed, then you don’t know that family. I understand I’m on an OSU site, so I fully understand the “OU tosses money out” argument. It’s just not true.
OU absolutely has NIL opportunities for players. ESTABLISHED, PRODUCTIVE players. Not offering of enticing guys to sign out of HS. Dang sure not to a kid who still has 6 months to change his mind before signing. If OU is coming close to doing something that’s considered tossing money, it’s to retain guys that have considered hitting the portal. Cayden Green (a starter as a freshman who ended up portaling to Mizzou for bigtime $$) is the most obvious case.
Maybe I’m naive but I don’t see any recruit for any university that does not have an expectation of what, let’s call it what it is, compensation they are going to receive at a given school. Again, I’m not trashing on OU because every school is doing the exact same thing. It’s reality. What I’m having trouble getting my mind around is that OU is not doing everything that every other school is doing to get recruits to commit. Are they really that high and mighty?
So you think OSU & OU are doing the same things as Oregon, A&M, Miami are doing?
“Expectation of compensation” is understood at every university, for every player during the NIL era. Neither OU nor OSU is enticing any player to come to Norman or Stillwater with talks or promises of money. That’s what this started from.
“Getting guys to commit”. You clearly aren’t familiar with Venables direction of recruiting. Hey I’ll quit arguing it. OU is offering up $$ to get kids who have never played a single down or even signed a letter of intent……in order to get kids to campus. You’re right.
Not trying to upset you, just voicing my opinion. I actually agree with you that the original poster was off base suggesting that OU outbid the pokes for this player. Here is where we do not agree. I believe that Gundy and Venables will do whatever they can to secure quality recruits. To do anything less in the current environment would be stupid and neither of those guys are that. I wonder why OSU is building one of it’s best recruiting classes in a long time. Is it because we are getting aggressive with NIL or is it that Gundy just got way better at recruiting? I suspect it is NIL. Maybe I’m wrong but any program that fails to take advantage will get left behind.
There are many of these kids asking “ what’s in it for me” and putting themselves on a pedestal to the highest bidder. For you to defend Venables is admirable but you are delusional if you believe these kids are not being promised NIL deals as recruits. OU is a blue blood program and the kids they typically go after, in a lot of maybe most incidents, are not kids that have an interest in a place like Stillwater.
“There are many of these kids asking what’s in it for me and putting themselves on a pedestal to the highest bidder “ Agree. But none of those kids are being brought to Norman, Stillwater or a bunch of other places. Those guys end up in College Station, Eugene, Ole Miss & so on.
This isn’t the 80’s & Barry Switzer isn’t in Norman. As I stated earlier, you have no clue what you’re talking about. But I’m wasting my time. OU is buying recruits & this kid from Weatherford is likely rolling around in a brand new vehicle today.
