Could Congress Force Bedlam Football to Return?

Get ready to breakdown legalese.

I would fully expect a lawsuit to be filed if this bill is signed into law. Not a lawyer but it seems like this could be a potential violation of the 1984 Supreme Court ruling on NCAA v. BOR Oklahoma and Georgia, which gave conferences the power to negotiate their media deals :man_shrugging:

Eh…..I have a difficult time believing OU even wants to schedule us now that Gundy is gone. I don’t think they would see it as very beneficial anyway. OU isn’t in a position where they really need to play Bedlam any longer, and the risk of losing just places them in greater difficulty in making the CFP.

@TylerWaldrep I’m not sure it’s a good enough source for you to use but anytime I want to look at all time records or longest opponents I use www.winsipedia.com they show we are OUs second most common opponent.

Hey thanks so much for this!

I will definitely be saving that link. Pretty sure I used that site before at some point a long time ago maybe, but for the life of me I could not get my brain to work once I couldn’t find it in their media guide. I think reading that bill too much broke me a bit. Glad that isn’t my job.

So I have no idea what ruling you’re referencing, but the rivalry bit is part of the bill that has to be opted into. Essentially conferences/schools would have to give up total control to join the pool.

I’m sure lawsuits will get fired over other parts (limitations on transfers), but not for this I think (or at least not any successful ones).

Just to make it clear, the story doesn’t really touch on OU’s desire to play Bedlam. If the Sooners/SEC opt into this bill, depending on how it is interpreted they could potentially be FORCED to play Bedlam from a legal standpoint.

I think even if all of this happens there’s enough wiggle room where OU could schedule someone else (likely Kansas or Kansas St according to Winsipedia).

I do think its possible the bill (if it somehow passes) could create enough of a culture shift that its just easier to play these rivalries occasionally than work around it.

Even then, I’m of the opinion OU would find it easier to work around playing someone else besides OSU. Cultural shift or not, I just don’t think there are too many OU alumni, fans, or coaches desiring to play a team that just hired one of the hottest coaches in America.

Not only that, but has a knack for finding hidden talent with just enough NIL resources now to potentially make OSU a team nobody is trying to schedule in the non-conference. I get what you’re saying. I just don’t see enough support for either side to keep it going.

So you think OU is scared of OSU because we hired a new coach?

The fact they admit they were more scared of Les Miles than Mike Gundy should give you a hint :+1:. I would even go further and say they aren’t afraid of a coach that gives you 4-20 (0-18) in his last couple of seasons. Fans and coaches aren’t afraid of a guy that was proving he was going to turn OSU football into the new Kansas of old :+1:. OSU is the ONLY football program in the Big 12 since the conference was created to have back-to-back winless conference seasons. Think of how bad that is? Not even Kansas, Iowa State, or Baylor accomplished that.

Ok. Gundy was not 4-20 in his last two seasons because he didn’t even coach those games. He was like 4-12 or whatever. Get a grip.

Gundy put the coaching staff together and the roster for the most part. I don’t see where he doesn’t maintain responsibility for how the rest of the season plays out? Do you seriously think we’re winning another game even if they held onto Gundy? I’d like to just see how high your delusion meter gets here.

At what point in time do you guys finally admit he was the common denominator to the downfall of OSU football? You guys want to give him credit for things he didn’t do, and then not hold him responsible for the things he did do. This is exactly why OSU football had one conference title in 20+ years under Gundy. Because you guys defend mediocrity.

No, he didn’t. The OC and DC Gundy selected weren’t the same. The QB1 Gundy chose wasn’t the same. Many players left in the transfer portal when Gundy got fired. The team he set up only had a passing semblance of the one we finished with.

What freaking downfall? All of you Gundy haters think we’re winning 8 games this season. If you can bounce back from two bad seasons that quickly, your program isn’t in some ruined state. We had two bad years, but what permanent damage has been done? None. The program at large is fine.

So we couldn’t beat 3-9 Tulsa WITH all our players, but we’re going to win a conference game or make a bowl game had nothing changed? Please tell me what drugs you’re using. I need to know.

We’re the first team since the Big 12 was created (in 1996) to have back-to-back 0 conference wins. We finally have invested into someone that cares more about wanting to win the conference than when his next pay raise is coming for not meeting expectations :+1:.

We had chances to win games even with everything getting blown up, so yes.

You’re missing the point. Had we even kept all our players we aren’t making it to 6 wins. We’re most likely an 3 or 4 win team at best (same as 2024). So nothing practically nothing changes dude. Gundy still gets fired and the team never improved from the previous year. Which still means you guys were wrong :+1:.
