A recap of the Cowboys’ first day at the U.S. Open.

I don’t mind Jax losing in this non-NCAA tournament to a wrestler he’ll see again. It’ll only make him better when it counts for us.

I know that Davino is really, really good, but I just didn’t think that Jax would lose to him. I was expecting Jax to win by more than he did in the NCAA championship match. To anyone who watched it, did Jax look injured or something?

Congrats to McKenna, Plott and Hendrickson! Love to see Hendrickson beat Kerkvliet again. That will shut some lions up who still blame Greg’s semifinal loss to Wyatt in 2025 on a leg injury. Wonder what excuse they’ll have this time. Also, super proud of Plott to get so stacked at 92kg and is really killing it at that weight. Machiavello is gonna be tough in the finals tonight, but I think he can do it! Let’s go Cowboys!

And to add a little more, you all have to see Amine beat Carr! Watched the match and it’s just Cam’s perfect wrestling. Amazing defense tied with some opportunistic offensive wrestling. Carr’s an absolute beast, and Cam got him! Really proud of Cody too. Wish he could’ve made it to Barr for a NCAA championship rematch. But he’ll be there again. Can’t wait for our guys and recruits at U20s!

I watched the replay of the Jax/Davino match. Davino was awarded exposure points early on during one of the scrambles that Jax you’re so good at. That’s what I don’t like about freestyle. You don’t have to hold somebody in a position very long like folk style and when you roll through, you get dinged for exposure points. Then Jax is behind and Davino just plays defense most of the rest of the way. And he is extremely difficult to take down conventionally. As a result, Jax scrambling ability is not only negated, but penalized.

I’m interested to see how Jax bounces back next month at the next tournament to get to Final X (always forget what the second tourney is called). He’s more than likely gonna see Ben again there since Blaze took the US Open. I agree with you (Lynn2) on the difference in scoring of freestyle. It can definitely sometimes work against Jax’s wild style. But he’s worked his way to the team before. I’m sure him and the coaches are working on the best way for him to take defensive specialists like Davino and Blaze in this style. Also wondering if PJ Duke is gonna enter at 70kg next tourney to rematch Landon or not in Final X.
