Infukndeed they better be !
Holder left in the summer of 21â. This game was scheduled a year later. How does that have anything to do with Holder?
I would bet less than 10 players watched any portion of the SDSU game over the weekend. Youâd be surprised at how little games on TV guys watch.
You still didnât tell me whatâs so good about scheduling this game?
As for âpeople donât answer our phone callsâ, that depends on who youâre calling. OSU will have a very hard time getting a powerhouse/BB on the phone. Why? Because the big boys find no benefit in playing a home/home with OSU. The W doesnât help your profile all that much & winning in Stillwater is tough. OSU is very rarely inside the top 10 in September, which doesnât make it a âmust seeâ game. The big boys want to either play a home/home with a powerhouse with name recognition. Or a program that lies within a fertile recruiting ground or historic venue. OSU in Stillwater is a tough place to play with no added value to a bluebloodâŚâŚthereforeâŚâŚyou donât wanna do it
I agree this would be a dumb game prior to the 12 Team playoff. Because of the expanded playoff the conference champion is in. The only way the Pokes, or any Big 12 team, get in is by winning the conference. Previously a loss to a team like this would be a death blow to your playoff hopes. Now it just means you must win the conference, which would be the case regardless. The reality is that all at-large bids are going to the SEC and Big10 anyway.
The Big 12 will probably get 2 teams in more often than not IMO. The champion plus another highly ranked team. Us and Baylor in 2021 and TCU and KState would have made it in 2021 and 2022.
Yes this is why Iâm not worried about playing strong non conf teams. The bias against the B12 is at the point where an undefeated B12 team is not better than 1 loss teams in other conferences. So the only way a B12 team gets in year over year is to win the CC. A non conf loss doesnât play into winning the CC so who cares. Also with the expansion of the number of teams I wonder if strength of schedule will play more of a factor for teams who donât win a CC like it does in basketball. If that was the case playing a good FCS team would be a plus.
I think itâs a dumb add to a schedule, regardless. The risk is high & the reward is zero. The expanded playoff does add a little more wiggle room to absorb a bad loss in the non-con. The game does nothing for your gate. Does nothing for grabbing a solid TV slot that week. Itâs a terrible game to bring recruits in. Itâs a game that likely will be one in which the Cowboys win in the 10-14 range, which, to the random fan thinks is a bad win. Itâs a really bad idea.
So let me ask you what would be more important if you get to splitting hairs between being #12 or #13 in the rankings.
The Cowboys finish 9-3 & lose a close one in the Big 12 Champ. That includes a 24-21 loss to SDSU.
Louisville finishes 9-3 with losses to Kentucky, Clemson & FSU.
Of course there are variablesâŚâŚbut in that scenarioâŚâŚOSU would definitely wish theyâd scheduled Middle Tenn St or Air Force
Iâd prefer we just go 12-0. Then, we can look back and think, âWe were worried for no reason!â
Do I think it was dumb to schedule them? Yes.
Should we win by 21+? Absolutely!
Will we? Not a chance.
Exactly. You win and itâs still an FCS school no one will care. Lose and youâre a clown show. If youâre going to schedule FCS teams they better be bad ones. Iâd like to see a P5, Tulsa, and another mid level G5 every year and drop the FCS game.
Itâs possible unless there are higher ranked BIG or SEC teams. Those conferences, especially the SEC, have made sure the CFP structure means they get the at-large bids and not the ACC or Big 12.
âespecially the SEC, have made sure the CFP structure means they get the at-large bidsâ
Explain what you mean by this? Just in general, as a broad questionâŚâŚdo you think the SEC in most years is deserving of having more at-large bids than the other Con?
I stand corrected on holder having something to do with this .
Whatâs good about it is I think we will have this one circled on the Calendar with a note that says donât f this up .
Donât know if this is true but read that this is a hand off game from Nebraska? Nebraska had them scheduled and couldnât fit it in for âscheduling â reasons. The payout for Nebraska canceling it was stiff so we took it and Nebraska pays the money for them coming here ? Anyone else heard that ? I can see why Nebraska wouldnât want to play them
Edit : Nebraska was scheduled to play SDSU. in 24 but games were moved to 2031
So something happened
Per the Oklahoman
âThe Jackrabbits will visit Oklahoma State in their season opener in 2024, on Aug. 31 at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The Jackrabbits will be paid $450,000 for the game, per a report from FBSschedules.com. SDSU coach John Stiegelmeier and deputy athletic director Slade Larscheid confirmed the report. The matchup replaces a game that had originally been scheduled between SDSU and Nebraska, but that game was moved to 2030 and Nebraska helped coordinate OSU as a replacement for 2024.â
It didnât say anything about Nebraska paying the
450k did it. I would think they would be liable for the fee ?
I am a University of Montana alum living in Stillwater and a big Pokes fan. Just got back from watching my Griz get their ass beat by SDSU. My family are all big FCS watchers as my old man went to NDSU and I went to Univ. of Montana. Have no doubt that the big boys of FCS are no longer the powder puff easy game they were years ago. HOWEVER, they are still clearly a step below true FBS teams.
One thing this article misses is that SDSU is graduating something like 30 seniors - including some guys who got a COVID year. The nucleus of their team was built around these guys. Including probably 6-7 guys who will get drafted and/or a shot at the next level .Including their right end, top 2 receivers, 2 offensive linemen (their entire left side), their running back, and a tight end.
If you get to go to the game pay attention to the size difference. While the stars and main recruits for SDSU will look âPower 5â big the rest of their team will not. Just watching the walk ins at the FCS National Championship made me realize the difference in athletes.
Can OSU lose this game? Yeah sure anything can happen. But this is not the SDSU team that won back to back national championships. OSU should roll.
Glad to have you here .
I appreciate the perspective and insights and will sleep slightly better this off-season having received that new information .
âOSU should rollâ Oklahoma St beat Central Arkansas 27-13 last year in a game that was 13-7 after 3 qtrs. Missouri St lost 23-16 a few years ago in Stillwater. I understand that next years Cowboys should be better in Sep than this version was. I also get that the Jackrabbits are losing their OC and a lot of players to graduation. But this was a program that was pretty dang good when they were put on the schedule. Thats the dumb part. Again, I dont think anyone is legitimately saying OSU is going to lose this game. But its the idea of scheduling them in the first place that was a bad move.
Tell me where at the time any decisions that OSU has made seem like good moves? Hiring Gundy? Hiring Boynton? Hiring Yurcich? Hiring Nardo?
The one good move was Holder spending time with T Boone. Best move ever
Hiring Gundy was a great move. You can argue whether hes a great coach. You can argue whether its time for him to ride off into the sunset. You can question a handful of stuff throughout his tenure. ButâŚthe dude has been great for OSU. If you think OSU hiring Mike Gundy was anything less than a very good hire, then youre blind. Oklahoma St is a place that needs stability. He gave it to em. Hes won. Hes kept his head above water far more than not. Ive said multiple times that I was a huge fan early on and have since grown to dislike his antics and ego. But, I can dang sure admit that hes been a massive HR for OSU for the majority of his tenure.
