Knowles going to Penn St for $3.1 mil for 3 years?! We never had a chance to keep him in Stilly. We don’t have the funds to keep top coaches.

Was just going to post something similar. OSU is officially no longer competitive in Football. We just don’t have the funds. RIP the Golden Age, it’s back to crap bowls every 6-7 years.

You could be right. With the way things are now what used to be a lopsided situation between the BB’s and everyone else, which was pretty bad if you look at who has won the natty the last 30 years, to now being exponentially worse. We and all the non BB’s have gone from single digit percentage chances of winning a natty to, for all intents and purposes, a nil (zero) chance IMO.
We never were. We had a small chance when boon was dealing cash and we had a hungry young coach.

Ok…when was OSU ever going to be in the business of competing monetary-wise with Ohio St, Penn St and OU? I agree that NIL has tipped the scales in even more favor of the “haves”…but OSU was winning as a seemingly “have not” before NIL. OSU has never been capable of having the highest paid asst coach in the country on their payroll. This isnt a new thing
This sounds pretty disheartening, but I think youre correct. I think NIL couldve been survived. I think the Portal couldve been survived. I think losing OU/TX and the “luster” of the Big 12 couldve been survived. I think the combination of all of those things though has really, really made a steep hill that much steeper for a large percentage of schools.

Knowles moving on is very interesting. Clearly he understands his system needs experienced leadership, something Ohio State wasn’t going to have next year and Penn State would. Gotta assume that Ohio State “could” have matched Penn State money-wise, so it can’t just be chasing a few bucks. Thus I wonder how long he stays at PSU before he either gets a HC opportunity (if that’s his goal) or he hops to another blue blood when PSU faces its rebuild.
As for Haisten, I wish I could read the article. I’m curious as to “why” he thinks next year is Gundy’s last. Its clearly a rebuilding year next year, given the turnover at WR, RB, OL, and across the defense, all learning new systems from new Offensive and Defensive coordinators. So I don’t see Gundy getting fired for going 6-6 and making the Sun Bowl or similar, which is what I expect OSU to do next year. And if OSU makes a bowl, Gundy ain’t retiring and leaving millions on the table. I stated that if OSU didn’t fire Gundy this year and instead fired/hired new coordinators (which it did), then you are basically committing to 2 more years of Gundy.

@aix_xpert The Knowles backstory of leaving Ohio St is apparently a riff between he and Ryan Day. It wasnt money, as Ohio St takes a backseat to nobody in terms of paying players/coaches. Hes from Philly, Franklin is in no danger of getting fired so its a steady ship, also he alledgedly liked the draw of being able to face Ohio St next year. All systems, in all walks of life are better with experienced leadership. Penn St loses a bunch on the Dline too. Ohio St reloads as it is, even moreso in the NIL era. This move to Penn St had nothing to do with roster depletion or a cupboard being better in Happy Valley than in Columbus

Interesting. I hadn’t heard that angle about feuding with Day, nor did I realize that Knowles is from Penn. I knew our offensive guys had come from there, but I don’t really know Knowles history or background pre-Duke.
I dont think thats accurate. He took the job in 2019 and with Knowles leaving he will have his 7th different Coordinator in 25’. Thats the same amount of Coordinators that Gundy will have during that time. I think its more about Ohio St being a tough place to coach as opposed to Ryan Day being tough to work for. Guys like Larry Johnson, Hartline and others have been with him since the beginning. There were other offensive coaches that were mainstays too until they were replaced once Kelly was given the OC job.
I dont have some insider info into Ohio St or anything. I have some contacts within a few places, most of which are in the baseball world or Sports Info Dept/AD office world. Nothing at Ohio St. I just listened to a podcast that detailed it. Ohio St spent TONS of money compiling this roster and apparently after they gave up 30 in a loss to Oregon, things went South between Knowles and Day. Knowles apparently was wanting out from that point on. Reached out to OU, and then once it got out that he was wanting to leave…Penn St and ND jumped in the mix. Again, thats according to the podcast.
