“Would you rather have a non-coference-less fall season or a full season in the spring?”
If both are roughly the same in terms of safety, I would go with a conference only schedule in the fall. If football got moved to the spring, I think most of our players who have a good chance of being drafted (Tylan, Chuba, etc) will sit out the season in order to prep for the draft. Of course, if the NFL moves the draft back to accommodate spring ball, that might change my choice.
The logic for coming back to improve draft stock is just as sound in the spring. If Chuba and Tylan needed to come back to give them more film they still need too. It only makes sense for guys like Trevor Lawrence who probably can’t improve draft stock to sit.
America killer, this thread is about an American sport called football now get along before you try and take this away from the good people of America.
Disagree. If your spring schedule ends 1 or 2 weeks before the draft, that means at the least you’ve got a season’s worth of bangs and bruises. At worst you’ve got an injury and zero time to recover from it before the NFL OTAs would potentially start. Guys who need to run a fast 40 at the combine or have a great pro day to make the difference between 3rd round or un-drafted FA would benefit from being fresh and healthy for those events. I’ve heard NFL analysts on ESPN make decent arguments that even guys who are unlikely to be drafted but hopeful to make an NFL roster should skip a spring season. If you’ve got a legit shot at the NFL, you’ve got 2 years of tape for them to look at. Not much to gain by putting more plays on film. Sure there’s a 1 in a million guy who will have a breakout year, but he’s probably on the outside looking in at the NFL right now if a breakout year is what he needs to get noticed.
Chuba has one year of meaningful tape. Tylan really only has 1.5 years.
and if Chuba adds 2,000 yards more tape (or 1,500 yds because I imagine a spring season would also be a shortened one), but can only run a 40 time that is let’s say 80% of his best at the combine due to the wear and tear of just completing a season, do you think his stock is improved?
Tylan has a better argument because he can show his repaired knee is durable.
Bottom line, it’s a case by case, each kid has his choice to make. Compelling arguments can be made for a lot of them that they should train for the combine/pro days.
I think the combine will be devalued in place of actual football.
Call me crazy but it seems more valuable to know they’re good at football in spring 2021 than bench press.
I’d call you crazy, but I want to keep from being flagged
My groupie has already made an appearance in this thread so it wouldn’t even be the most notable thing said about me here.
Footnote: OSU is scheduled to play Texas in Stillwater not Austin on Thanksgiving weekend.
This game is marked on the calendar, it’s bigger than bedlam this year
