Thanks for stopping by – here’s your daily dose of Oklahoma State sports news. OSU Bullets • Cowboy Football made CBS Sports’ bottom 25 college football teams (CBS Sports) • Behind Dan Lanning’s pregame speech to the Ducks was pretty responsive to Mike Gundy’s comments (FootballScoop) • Bill Haisten has been having conversations with donors and #sources, they had a couple of strong takes: Now, from a different source: “There’s a reason (a new contract) hasn’t gotten done, and that’s because it’s not getting done. I would be surprised if Chad is around to hire a new coach.” That second sentence is a spoiler on the third question — the Gundy question: The answer on that one is an emphatic (C) — that the 2025 Cowboys are Gundy’s 21st and final Oklahoma State football team. [TulsaWorld] • Marshall, Southwell and Co. talked about life after the Oregon loss (PFB) • Sporting News had some different replacement names that stuck out if Mike Gundy is let go (HCS) • Woof – Pokes projected just over three wins this year. I think it’s his last season.
We’ll see, but wouldn’t hurt my feelings at all.
I don’t see the upside in hiring Eric Bienemy.
Canning Weidberg already seems odd. He hasn’t really done anything bad. Guess they really must’ve wanted Gundy fired last year.
I could be wrong on the power structure, but this is what I’d do last year if I was on the BOR: “Chad, you either fire Gundy or you’re gone, too.” Part of the issue is that we can’t get everybody on the same page. Look at Holder and Gundy and Boone. Look at Chad and the Board and Gundy. Publicly, they said all the right things last season after the contract got re-structured. Privately, it’s a
show. Which is the root of the problem.
Once Gundy started prioritizing Gundy over Oklahoma State, the long, slow, sure decline set in. Carson identified that moment as the time Gundy started hiring obscure, unproven at D1 coordinators, and I agree. There’s been a few bright moments, sure, but even a light bulb that’s burning out will flash brightly every so often before it goes out. Losing two consecutive games across two seasons by 121-3 means the light bulb is done.
The BOR are idiots if they fire Weiberg. He has a pretty good track record with HC hiring so far and IMO he needs to be involved in the Football HC selection. At the end of last year pretty much everyone with any sense agreed last year that Gundy shouldn’t be fired and that he should be given the chance to turn things around. Now that this season looks to be going in the crapper folks are conveniently forgetting what they said at the end of last year.
Since you and the people “with any sense “ were so frigging wrong last year, maybe we should listen to the BoR.
Daddy ball started it.
I will agree with you about Chad! He has hired a great wrestling coach and very good basketball coach - did he also hire our women’s basketball coach who is a winner. I don’t know why they would put him in the Gundy picture. Big B you have always been a Gundy homer as there were many of us who know him wanted him gone last season. We didn’t want him around to try and rectify the current situation.
I agree with everything you said. Well done!
Without knowing anything behind the scenes, I have no issues with Chad’s performance as AD. He’s made great hires in Wrestling, MBB & WBB. He’s advanced some facilities upgrades and has been willing to pull strings to increase NIL.
He couldn’t fire Gundy last year. The man is a legend and went to 18 straight bowls and a conference championship the previous year. He had to give him a chance. And, he didn’t just do nothing - he lessened the buyout so presumably the university can move on this off-season.
I’m not sure how you can view Chad’s tenure as anything other than an A or B.
Good news! That means your eyesight is working perfectly. That would be a disaster hire.
Hey champ,
Well, the BoR retained him, so… we did?
They also hired Kayse Shrum and Chad Weiberg, so what exactly am I trusting them on? They seem to be pretty crap at hiring and firing people. The BoR needs to be replaced.
I was thinking along those lines as well. I mean hiring David Taylor was a home run! It’s difficult to handle Gundy because he’s been there 20 years.
Yea I don’t consider myself to be such a thing. I’ve always promoted the idea that we all need to have our eyes wide open when considering changing head coaches. It’s a process rife with potential disaster and shouldn’t be discussed lightly. Now I have defended HCMG when people say or claim things that aren’t factual. I also do that all the time in discussions not involving HCMG.
I think Chad has done an incredible job in the AD’s role. Frankly, he has clearly resurrected the wrestling program, has the basketball program headed in the right direction, and has most of the other sports doing well. He inherited Basketball & Wrestling programs that were empty shells of their former selves, and has exhibited class, fortitude, leadership, and professionalism in turning them around!
Regarding football, firing Gundy, the most winningest HC in the history of the school would not have been appropriate after having one losing season following eighteen years of consecutive bowl games. But I’m willing to bet, having given Gundy the chance that he deserved; Chad is ready to course correct the football program as well!
The employees of OSU’s athletic department absolutely love Chad, they will go thru walls for him, which speaks volumes of his capability and leadership style. The same cannot be said of his predecessor…
And finally, I must comment on two points covered in this article:
1). To suggest the former AD might agree to a short-term return to that job; this is so incredibly stupid there are words to describe the ignorance.
And…
2). It is said that several donors would “heavily” support the hiring of an athletic director; this too is beyond stupid, and if this is truly being said, then the best descriptor is ignorant fools the lot of them.
Oh 100% yes let’s proceed without the donors. Everyone and Gundy himself are talking about the lack of money but let’s call the people with the money “ beyond stupid “. It looks like you have learned from Gundy as well as his son has.
People doing the most bitching are the ones that are so tight they don’t even buy an 80 dollar a year format to do your biltchkng
They sure aren’t getting a dollar out of you ![]()
