I am excited for the new coaching staff but have to temper my expectations due to past realities: I just researched the following:
Over the last 3 years at North Texas the Mean Green have given up an average of 221 yards rushing per game at 5.08 per carry. As well, they have surrendered 250+ rushing yards 14 times in those games. In games that UNT and their opponents have both scored 30+, UNT is 8-5 in those games. So I do expect a big jump in offensive production, but until we can roster a competent defense, we may very well just be playing for a bowl.

I expect to see wild expectations, but that’s better than hopelessness.

I went through their defensive stats and came to the same obvious conclusion - the offense will be night and day but if the team wants to exceed all expectations it will come on their play on defense. The jury is still out on Cassidy - I believe he has some good talent on the defensive side of the ball but will his schemes allow them to have success?

Well….I think they’ll be better on both sides of the ball compared to last season. I also won’t be wondering if we’re going to beat Tulsa or not 
.
Yeah, I’m not very optimistic about the defense and I will expect us to have to outscore opponents. I also expect that UNT offense to not function as well in the Big XII. I’m not as bullish on this season as some, but that doesn’t mean I think Morris won’t be a good coach. I think we have some talent at pass rusher, at least that’s where the hype seems to be. That could definitely elevate the defense to be where it needs to be to have a stronger season. The offense could also come together and play at a Big XII caliber with the unusual level of cohesion it will have in today’s college football, so I’m not saying either thing can’t happen, I’m just not expecting it. More worried about the D. I do agree both sides ought to be better than it has been the last couple of seasons, but last year we basically stripped the team down to studs, so it’s not like that’s surprising.
Let’s just pray that isn’t the goal, year after year from here on.

That would be a really solid season with a lot of confidence from the fanbase going forward.
Becoming better on offense, immediately improves the defense, because either the offense is sustaining drives and letting the defense rest or the offense is quick strike and the opponent may get out of their game plan to try and catch up.
OSU can definitely improve on points allowed, but trying to get under 166 defense rush yards a game may prove more difficult with Morris’ track record. I think we are going to see some 38-35 games….which is exciting if we’re the 38.

Good point. UNT’s ugliest defensive games last year were when they couldn’t build a lead.
Our defense might be kind of like 2011, we gave up a lot of yards, but we scored so fast that team abandoned the run game and ultimately threw picks trying to catch up. Are we gonna go 12-1, I doubt it.
Or even if we had a good defense we could find ourselves still slugging it out in games against Missouri State 23-16 or Tulsa 28-23 if we are average offensively
