Maybe call a game like you’re playing OU and not Kansas?
Maybe teach your special teams how to properly cover a punt return?
OU didn’t even have their starting QB for the Bedlam game
OU’s passing completion percentage was less than 50%
OU only had 358 yards of offense (165 rushing and 193 passing)
OU was 2-15 on 3rd down conversions
The turnover ratio was 1-1 before the last 19 seconds of the game
Mike Gundy did what Mike Gundy knows. He played Mike Gundy football. Instead of playing to win, it was another episode of playing and hope you don’t lose. OU scored 14 points just based on the errors of the Special Teams. I’ll let you guess who was coaching special teams that year.
No your doing what you do, claim he doesn’t recruit at a championship level yet somehow he should have 3 conference championships? Please explain that to me.
Yet they’ve been there twice and won it once so far. Sometimes competent coaching does wonders. It goes back to what I have said multiple times on here.
If you’re not going to adjust your coaching style or skills then consider getting better players. If you decide to change up some things and do things differently (for the better) then you don’t have to necessarily recruit higher caliber players.
You got two coaches who’ve went to Waco, TX and proven that so far. I don’t know who else has to do that to prove to you it can be done.
Hey I’m just quoting you. You claim he doesn’t recruit well enough to win yet you expect him to win the conference. Why is that? And please quit using Baylor as a reason, I’m asking you why you think we should win it when we don’t have championship caliber players in your mind.
I don’t know why you’re asking me that question? Did you not watch the coaching in the 2013 and 2016 Bedlam games? I figured that would be self-explanatory.
Why? Because it doesn’t fit the excuse narrative you all have became accustomed to?
Because we aren’t talking about Baylor? This is supposed to be an Oklahoma state blog. 3 different coaches playing or winning conference championships in the last decade is more of a testament to the program rather than the coach. Baylor has definitely decided basketball and football matter more than equestrian and girls soccer.
The Baylor program has recruited worse or on par with OSU over the last few years. That tells me it’s more of a testament to Baylor being able to find the right coaches, and we (OSU) sticking with a guy that knows how to get you to a bowl game. I know it hurts to admit the Baylor scenario is working, but it is what it is.
You act like I expect Gundy to win the conference ever year. I’ve never said such a thing. You’re trying to take focus off the main point here. I’ve said he should probably have at least three. If you have multiple seasons where you return over 17 returning starters and still find yourself at 3rd (which I’ve posted to Robert) that just tells me it becomes more of a coaching problem instead of a personnel problem.
If we can only win one conference title over 17 seasons when we’ve had multiple seasons with a bunch of experienced returning starters it leads me to believe we absolutely have to hit on better recruits. Because it becomes obvious if we can’t do that then one of two things needs to change.
The coach needs to change his philosophy and adjust to the current college football environment.
The coach needs to find a way to get better players to execute exactly what he wants them to do.
Gundy talks about how you can’t replace experienced players (Okay, that’s fine I suppose), but the statement doesn’t do any justice if you keep doing the same thing and end up with either the same results or worse. OSU football should be at a point right now where we don’t have to celebrate one great season every 10 years. At least that’s Pat Jones point of view.
There really isn’t any legitimate reason why we can’t. I know you guys think Waco, TX is some special destination for players, but the reality is that it’s in the middle of nowhere and the recruiting rankings don’t suggest it’s been a destination for higher caliber recruits.
What takes Baylor 2-3 years to do you think is impossible for OSU to do. So yes he’s correct. And it’s not like Baylor was on the cusp of challenging OU or Texas for a Big 12 title when Gundy first took over OSU. We weren’t the worst program in the Big 12 at the time either. Those honors were going to Baylor and Kansas on an annual basis.
The reality is it’s only a couple hours from some the best recruiting areas in the nation from every direction. You can say what you want about Waco to fit your narrative but being in texas alone makes it easier to recruit too.
“Haven’t been able to do that the last 60 years!!!”
“He doesn’t have the recruiting budget!!!”
“It’s all Mike Holder’s fault!!!”
Give it a break already. We know you think if we get to the CCG and NY6 appearance you deem it as a coaching miracle. There is a program in Waco that’s proven it can be done with three different coaches.
Go look at the recruiting rankings for Baylor since 2017 and compare them to OSU. There isn’t much of a difference. Stop trying to make excuses. If the location was such a massive difference there would be a difference in recruiting.
So these aren’t facts? Do me a favor and go see if you can find Baylor’s actual budgeting info. As for holder, thank god he found money for a 60 million dollar baseball stadium, all while publicly talking shitttt on his football coach as he gives him a recruiting budget the bixby Spartans could compete with .
