The best OSU dual team in a decade?
I didnt understand qhy Mizzou didnt have a guy at 133. That the second spot. That wrestled give up 6 points is weird. With a player at 133 fix my not moved. That 9 could have zero, if fix didnt win big and we lost the 142.
Hope we controll our injuries.
Easy on the superlatives. While this has been Coach Smith’s best coaching job in years, and dual-wise this team has risen to the occasion, I don’t see them finishing high at the NCAA tournament. They could sneak into the top five if the young guys have a great tournament and Fix finally comes through, but I don’t see how they can finish in the top 2 or 3. There’s just not enough horses in the stable for that.
I’ll say it again, got to give a lot of credit to Coleman Scott!
Its always interesting how poeple put a lot of praise on a guy who just gets there. The biggest help is we have 3 freshman fill holes. All the kids we have were here before he came.
Im not taking anything away from him its just to early to say he is that.
I agree that it’s unlikely we end up in top 3 at NCAA tournament. Especially with Surber not at full strength nursing a bum knee. I just don’t see how he even lasts through all those rounds. Same concern for Jameson. Will get an idea about Surber from the Big 12 tournament.
Listening to Coleman on the radio show, he thinks his guys are capable of beating any top ranked opponent. I like his positivity. He brings that mentality to the room.
I remember the Tommy Chesbro teams. Fantastic dual teams, but couldn’t take it to a higher level at NCAA. Then again, who could against Iowa who is just so tough winning all those consolation matches?
Is Sam Smith any good at this level? I hope he has better luck than Joe who was hammered by injuries, illness, and trouble making weight.
This was the season we were projected to contend for the title because we would have had AJ and his brother. I don’t see any finalists on this team. This is a really good team, but not a great team. But the program seems to be heading in the direction of again becoming a perennial top 3 contender. The days of being a dynasty are long gone. Too much parity, and too much Cael Sanderson for that. I sure want to see us pummel Iowa each year because I think the Brands twins are obnoxious.
I love the fact they were able to bring him back. The future of OSU wrestling looks to be in good hands. I like the way he carries himself, he obviously knows his stuff, and I think he’s brought a new energy to the team. Coach Smith made a great choice and I’m glad he convinced him to commit to the process.
i see Fix and Plott in the finals. Plott could actually win it. He took it to Parker in that first period. If a couple breaks go his way - who knows. Izzak will be a 3 or 4 seed so that would be a tough road to the finals - 165 is just absolutely loaded. Should be a fun tournament season will this lineup. The young guns are only gonna get better. looking forward to seeing Cael Hughes and Christian Carroll in the lineup next season too.
Smith would get owned by Cael Hughes, but I guess they’re intending to make Hughes a 141-pounder. But Sam has some potential, depends on his desire to become very good to great, hard to live up to Papa’s level. But we got JJ McComas coming in who might be able to make 133. He’s cat quick and only started wrestling when he was 12. I kinda wonder if Sam can beat him out. Plus we got Rin Sakamoto coming in who won All-Japan as a higher schooler, only second high schooler to win it. Here’s what an American friend in Japan wrote about that, he writes a lot of articles in English about wrestling: “Sakamoto won the All-Japan Invitational title in June, only the second high schooler ever. Actually it was in a non-Olympic weight class (61kg), so the field was thinner because most of the top wrestlers went up or down into the Olympic weights.”
This team is a LOT better than anyone projected and like I said earlier, a lot of the credit for that has to go to Coleman. He works with the smaller guys. Penn State has crazy amount of money for wrestling so it’s going to be difficult to knock them off, but Iowa just did it last season.
Teatown - do you know about Jamison’s injury? If so, could you elaborate?
No idea about that.
