Five Thoughts on Oklahoma State's 66-61 Victory against Tarleton State

It was a battle, but the Cowboys get past Tarleton State.

Who’s the best 3-pt shooter on the team? Not sure, but if there was a contest, I would bet on Connor Dow. Yet, he can’t seem to get on the floor.

Sam Houston beat this Tarleton group by 29. Baylor beat 'em 104-41.

Last night was closer than it should have been BUT, having worked in the Tarleton Athletic Department for many years, I thought I would provide some insight.

This is not a trash program.

During the time I worked at TSU, Tarleton was led by Lonn Reisman. Some of you may remember him from his days at Connors and Southeastern. They guy could coach. His record below:

Since he retired from coaching, Tarleton struggled a bit under his son, Chris and then during the transition to DI. That said, the foundation is there for a strong basketball program and that showed with the savvy hire of Billy Gillespie. They aren’t world beaters but they are FAR from a trash program. Should OSU have beaten them more soundly? Absolutely. That said, they beat Scott Drew and Baylor in Waco several years back and gave Mark Turgeon’s Texas A&M squad all they could handle in College Station as well. I suspect they’ll be a tourney team in the next few seasons. Not a bad team or program at all.

Tarleton, like Abilene Christian, will do well in conference play. Gillespie has front-loaded a brutal schedule that will benefit his team when they start playing conference.

Tarleton is a fine school at the level they play on. But this should not have even been a competitive game for us. I thought, after the OU game, that we had a ways to go but with more reps, we could improve to be an ‘in the bubble discussion’ team. After this game, I’m much less confident.

We ain’t making the tournament unless we get the autobid. Which ain’t happening.

Make the tournament?!? Was anyone thinking that was a possibility?? I’d be happy if they finished in the top 10 but I have zero expectations that could happen.

Defense should always be a given. Offense can come and go Seems these guys play lazy at times. Not much better than last year but I really didn’t expect a lot
