Five Thoughts on Oklahoma State's 82-65 Exhibition Loss to Wisconsin

It was ugly.

I’ve posted it here before and I’ll say it again. If we don’t lockdown on three-point shooting then I’m not sure how good we’re going to be this year. Perimeter defense has been one of our biggest Achilles heels over the last few years.

Three years, three line-ups, same coach, and same three point performance on both sides of the ball. The most concerning to me is 3-pt D. Either the players have been told to hedge too hard toward the ball and can’t get to the shooter in time or they aren’t working hard enough to get to the shooter when they get the ball. Either is a Coach problem. I don’t see much in the way of sets/plays which really concerns me. Third yr for Lutz if he doesn’t vastly improve this season we should start looking for a new guy.

I’ve been defending Lutz on here, as I usually do for any coach in any sport in their second or third year. I don’t think it’s generally fair to start talking about getting rid of a coach so soon, or even talking of a “hot seat” at this point, especially when there have been some clear signs of improvement. But I will agree that if this team sucks as bad at perimeter defense as they have the past two seasons (and by appearances from three exhibition games, this would appear to be the case), then clearly this is a coaching issue that Lutz et al. would be well advised to address before the torches and pitchforks crowd starts yelling for his head.
