I woeful first half doomed the Pokes.
Sean Sutton, Travis Ford, Mike Boynton, Steve Lutz - aren’t these all the same coach? They are all good, decent guys who work hard. However, we get the same results no matter the name of the coach. I don’t care to hear about recruits coming in next year. Brad Underwood was our only hope and Illinois opened up the bank vault to snatch him away. So where does that leave OSU basketball?
At home in March
I like Coach Lutz but it seems to me if you keep doing the same thing especially on defense you are going to get the same results. A tough match up zone with two bigs in the game might help defend the three and put us in the position for better defensive rebounding.
Man. This was the Mike Boynton refrain for all of those years. “Mike Boynton is a great guy, but…” I would rather have crazy Bobby Knight than a nice guy who can’t win. Lutz needs another season to get his team right, though. One year isn’t enough time.
And to be fair, with the portal defections from the team before last season and again before this season, he hasn’t had a chance to show what his teams could be like when they’ve had more than one season to learn his system and develop chemistry. Even Eddie often couldn’t field better than an NIT team under such circumstances.
Hopefully Lutz can get more than a couple players to come back next year to go along with the recruit class he assembled. If he does I sense we could be very good. Any talk of his being on the hot seat at this point would be idiotic.
Way premature to lop Lutz into the dustbin of OSU hoops history. And in classic OSU/Charlie Brown form
, we want to anoint Wormwood as the wonderful coach who got away, instead of the conniver that he actually was.
Let’s all get a grip.
Outside of struggling in the tournament, he’s been very good since he left. He went where they paid him the most. I can’t fault him for that. I’m also tired of nice guy coaches that can’t finish in the top half of the conference.
Was/is Underwood a good coach? Absolutely. Was he upfront with OSU? Did he wait till we were done in the tourney to work behind the scenes to milk his deal with Illinois? He certainly didn’t appear to, by all accounts. Thus, my use of the word “conniver”, and my frustration with the “poor loser” mentality of OSU fans.
All of this is what I mean when I write about the idiotic, premature comments regarding Lutz and his situation at OSU.
Yes, but I think he really thought OSU would match. Unfortunately, we were coming off the worst contract in college basketball history and Holder was too afraid or didn’t have the money to do anything. If you know you can’t/won’t get a raise because your boss can’t afford it, you’re definitely getting out.
