The Cowboys got drilled in Allen Fieldhouse.
Probably makes no difference in this game, but Lutz appears to need to learn when to call timeouts to break opponent runs. Called the first timeout down 9 at 28-19, then called second timeout when down 29. Game was over at that point, and Lutz still had 3 timeouts in his pocket.
We weren’t going to win in Allen with KU coming off 2 straight losses, but I’m continually amazed at Lutz’s lack of flexibility in his defensive system. KU is actually a fairly easy team to defend playing straight up tough man to man defense, but he stayed with his unsuccessful weak side help which a good passing team can slice up - and that’s exactly what KU did. I think I counted 8 wide open 3 point attempts in the first half alone.
Offensively, we get nothing out of 2 starters (Keller and Jennings). Why not try Newman and Avery in their place?
Here’s my view of the silver lining: it’s Lutz’s first year without a complete roster with his kind of players to develop, and he’s sort of in just as much of a learning phase as the players are. Somewhat of a trial and error process for now. Should be notably better next season.
