The Cowboys had no answers for a balanced Iowa State attack.
At least EM knows what to look for when he goes shopping in the portal. Defensive talent! He can promise a lot of guys a starting position!
It took the kitchen sink and everything else to go right for ISU to win. That said, the defense was still atrocious regardless of ISUs luck.
“The Cowboys had 14 missed tackles according to Pro Football Focus, and those led to some big plays.”
And there lies one of the biggest problems with our defense since the Oregon game. All the talk about “Could OSU be the next Curt Cignetti and Indiana”?
Here’s the biggest difference. Curt Cignetti falls under the Nick Saban and Frank Beamer coaching trees. Both of whom started as defensive backs coaches and coordinators early in their careers.
Cignetti learned early on under both these guys that your offense can only be as good as your defense allows them to be. In other words, you have to be solid on both sides of the ball or at least excellent on one side and average on the other.
Right now, our defense hasn’t even been average, and the last 3 weeks of play have proven it. We literally have 2 good quarters of defense through 12 quarters of football. You aren’t going to Arlington if that’s the status quo. I know OU’s defense sucked under Riley, but at least they made stops during crunch time consistently.
We’ve went from being 46th in total defense before the Houston game to now 105th in just 3 weeks.
The once “darling” defense?
It was never darling. That bit of myth was conjured up after the Oregon game. The one where they gave up 31 points.
I think we have some really decent players on D but this unit is not good and neither are the coaches.
