You do make a good point that was echoed by another reporter - Gundy won’t be interacting with the media until spring ball so this is the last shot to talk until then. Our house is not in order and something needs to change. It feels like a lifetime ago but last year we were inches away from going to the playoffs. I guess TCU is justified in firing a man in the middle of the season they literally erected a statue of. But it’s a business and his success has come with truckloads of money - and expectations.
Absolutely. It’s part of your job. These guys are getting paid a bunch of money & deservedly so. But it isn’t always “smokin’ & jokin’” in front of the cameras.
I said this article we are commenting on is a hit job, not the question.
How is the opinion on a site a “hit job”?
Sorry, I did not fully explain. I agreed with the poster that said the “article” was a hit job. Not the question at the news conference. The author could have added more context. Everyone loves to jump on Gundy when we lose.
Because he did not give Gundy’s full answer. He only gave the worst sounding part–to fit his narrative of “Gundy got an F”. It’s what the national media does all day every day.
I agree that Gundy gets touched up when the Cowboys are losing. But that’s the case with all coaches. Gundy hammered a reporter for asking a legitimate question in a respectful way. Gundy threatened to pull their access, which in turn threatens the livelihood of the site & journalist. I think Gundy is and should be more professional. It’s a disappointing loss to end a disappointing season……Gundy should expect some tough questions & quite frankly…….it’s his job to do so
The full question wasn’t written in the article & neither was the full answer. The video clip did that.
I went down a rabbit hole and came across this just now. Go to the 21:30 mark & listen. It’s from an OSU guy who is a media member.
All sides were at fault. Marshall’s timing was inappropriate. Gundy was frustrated and angry. Hopefully cooler heads will prevail. IMO, Boone you missed on your grades. I remember when an I was given for Incomplete. I’m referring to the offensive line or in this case that lack of offensive line. They couldn’t or didn’t block all season. When you are hurried in your passing attack and you can’t rush out of your own backfield you have no offense. Period. Playing behind the chains limits your play calling. Trust in your players abilities to run plays is a domino effect. Nonexistent blocking is contagious. It creates happy feet in a QB, dancing around by the backs and indecision across the offense. I stopped counting early on when the line missed blocks and just stood around. Hurried or off balance throws. Trying to run through keyholes won’t work. It all puts more pressure on the defense and special teams. It’s similar to trying to stop an avalanche. NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. The players need to look inside themselves to find the real problem. Once that problem is fixed this team will get better.
The audio was a good listen. Thanks for posting it. I think a tough question is fine. THAT tough question was more or less fine. I just don’t agree with media (and National media too) tweaking responses to meet their narrative. Give the full Gundy answer.
I just hate the “fan boy” media guys. Also The “gotcha” media guys. There seem to be very few legitimate guys that are actually trying to do things the right way in the news world nowadays. Berry Tramel is as good as it gets because he’s not afraid to ask tough questions, while still being respectful and fair. I think the reporter in this instance was doing the same thing & Gundy chose to act like a child. Mike has been a HC for 17 seasons & been in I’d guess 250 postgame pressers. I’m sure he’s been asked far more critical & combative questions than what he got the other night. Mike called a guy an as……while he himself acted like an as. He claimed to be worried about guys jobs & families……while threatening to essentially take the reporters job/livelihood by restricting his access to OSU football. I just think Mike is & should be better than that. It’s a disappointing loss to end a disappointing season. Those questions SHOULD be asked
Robert Allen? This is your example of other reporters’ “saying it was out of line.” GTFO. That’s laughable. Also, it wasn’t Boone and it wasn’t antagonistic. Gundy is the crybaby who made a big deal. A real professional would’ve just brushed it off with a non-answer.
Sounds like a lack of accountability and is a big issue in America.
It was a press conference. There won’t be press conferences next month. Get off Gundy’s jock. Geez. He’s a man. He’s 40. He can take it.
Gundy needs to hit the road. Be nice to talk about hope aging
Gundy’s response was not professional, and he should have handled it better. However, Marshall’s question was extremely ill timed and, not professional given the circumstances. Coaches are people too and asking that question at a presser after a loss and expecting a real answer is kind of dumb. Just my opinion.
“Marshall’s question was extremely ill timed and, not professional given the circumstances”
When should that question have been asked, if not at the conclusion of a disappointing loss to end a disappointing season?
I tagged you in the podcast I posted above. It’s pretty enlightening on the situation from a journalist’s perspective, which is important IMO. People on here saying it shouldn’t have been asked & criticizing the journalist for his question is akin to me trying to tell a plumber how to fix a toilet.
They lost 6 of the last 7 games. If that ain’t a downward spiral, what is? How many times in any sport, at any level, does a coach recover after completely losing a team like Gundy did this year? And, yes, he lost this team, both literally and figuratively. All coaches have a shelf life at a particular place. Gundy has reached his.
