'He's Doing Fine': Gundy Discusses Defensive Coordinator Bryan Nardo

Sir, all due respect and you too have a right to post. However, it would seem that anyone who can count can easily determine that it is your ‘conclusion’ that seems non-sensible.

As you state, ‘everybody’ is an overwhelming majority. A minority of one has ever right to be heard, but still obviously isn’t right. jmho

Personally, I have never called for ‘Gundy’s Head’ in any of the Cowboy forum’s I’ve participated in over last 20 yrs. Rather, I have consistently acknowledged his successful career. However, I have also consistently pointed out Gundy’s strong management tendencies to be ‘very slow’ in key decision-making and recognizing/embracing necessary changes!
Player and Staff personnel (+) Industry changes (+) Game decisions etc … just habitual mis-reads of the situation at hand etc … to me Gundy’s 1 Conference Championship in 20 yrs HC career will always speak louder than his career win/loss record and is the perfect expression of his extreme conservative nature around embracing necessary changes when clearly necessary

I also have never wanted Gundy gone. I have always wanted him more aggressive at times, ala Mike Leach. I have always wanted him to be a bit less ego-centric in his decision making as well.

However, at this point, if he feels that Nardo is ‘fine’, it isn’t his head I want on the chopping block. Although, my anatomical preference would yield little I fear as his testicular fortitude has always been in the bottom of his wife’s purse, which is where mine resides as well. But, I am not a head football coach of a division one school. lol

I said last season I thought Rangel was the better QB of what we had in 2023. He also had the most recent experience as far as playing on the field goes. Instead, we put a third string QB in that took 11 snaps in 2 years at Michigan with a bad injury history. I didn’t think Rangel got much of a fair shot at the beginning of 2023.

It was evident in the BYU game that the offense runs a lot smoother through him. Gundy talks about experience while screwing up any valuable experience Rangel could’ve gained last season. Dunn’s offense does not work with a pocket passer like Bowman.

Bowman can have all the experience he wants. However, that’s not going to do the team and collective good if he still hasn’t developed any further than what we’ve currently seen. Gundy is one of the worst coaches (if not the worst) I’ve ever seen at choosing a QB. Which is odd considering he played the position at the collegiate level. He just keeps reinforcing to me he’s Pat Jones on steroids.

He returned the second most starters in the country with a team that won 10 games last season. He returned all of his OL and the best running back in the country. He probably has a top 5 receiving corp in the country.

He also returned an All-American LB. Injuries didn’t really occur much until after the WV game. However, in some way, the best coach in school history found a way to eliminate himself from the conference championship discussion not even halfway through the season.

You want him to fix the issues when he is indeed ONE OF THE ISSUES. What else could you possibly want to see before considering it might be time to move on?

Gundy needs to go period. If he thinks Nardo is fine let him join Nardo and Dunn in the unemployment line.

Agree with pretty much all you say here. Ultimately all the coaches are responsible. In reality the coaching problems could lie with everyone equally or with one specific area. Problem could be mostly the HC for hiring bad OC’s or the problems could be with the position coaches if the players motivation is the issue as the position coach is the one who directly works with the players. Or it could be with some other coaches. None of us can know though because we aren’t involved with the day to day activities.

Your criticisms are valid in that someone reasonable could infer them from observation. Personally I’m not that astute at knowing/predicting what someone is thinking without them telling me so I prefer not to, That’s just me and I don’t expect everyone else to be that way.

We can all agree that there IS a problem, a big one. You even seem to agree that it is under the ‘coaching’ umbrella and that falls on Gundy.

Certainly there are problems no doubt and changes are needed. I would prefer that OSU admin and/or the HC make change decisions based on an evaluation on where the problems lie and performance criteria. Things like the fact that someone has been around forever or makes 7 mil a year shouldn’t really factor in.

I am okay if he makes 8 million, but only if he gets his head out of his self-absorbed (a word that I cannot post even with symbols)! lol jmho…

Not sure if any of you have noticed a trend with Gundy’s career. He did well early on because he hired good assistants. He becomes stagnant when he hires people nobody knows much about.

His one and only conference title was catapulted by the fact that he had Monken as his OC (currently OC for the Ravens). Also, by the fact that Weeden (who he didn’t want to play) was a huge part of that success. Btw, Weeden ended up being the 22nd overall pick in the draft :man_shrugging:.

So when was the next time Gundy was closest to winning the conference? It was by hiring a guy named Jim Knowles (currently DC for Ohio State). Knowles actually made his defenses better at Duke with whatever players he could get there. Knowles also made the defense better every year at OSU.

For those of you thinking Dunn was a big part of the 2021 season. Let me remind you that Dunn, in the five seasons he’s been here, has only finished in the top 50 offensively ONCE.

Unless Gundy goes out and hires a proven coach at the P4 or G5 level he’s NOT going to take OSU football anywhere significant. I find it comical that myself and a few others predicted this when everyone started talking about OSU being the next “top dog” in a newer conference.

If he couldn’t win the conference when Texas sucked and OU wasn’t a factor, then what made anyone think he would do it when those two programs left? Gundy can only go as far as his coordinators can take him. Gundy hires Yes Men now. He doesn’t hire proven coaching.

This is strictly conjecture, but so very believable of our head coach. When he was his own OC and sitting on the equipment trunks while the defense was on the field, we enjoyed limited success, but some. When he first hired Holgy away from TTech, he had to agree to give complete autonomy on the offensive side of the ball. That is the ONLY selfless act from Gundy of which I am aware. While our success soared, and continued with Monken, Gundy’s jealousy of credit given soared as well. He has since hired unknowns. My sense is that if successful, he gets the credit that he relishes. jmho…

LMAO. If that’s fine, better give me a shot. Completely delusional!!!

Most of these Gumby supporters won’t acknowledge the man has a massive ego!

Yea I don’t think that anyone is surprised that HCMG has a large ego. Something like that is normal for a Div 1 head coach. But heck lets get rid of him because of it. That’ll surely solve all our problems. In fact lets limit our HC search to beta males just to make sure we don’t end up with that dreaded ego in our next HC.

I’ve come to a conclusion that this year was a complete disaster.

I’ve lost count of how many times he’s told us that he thought they “got outcoached a little today”. At some point he’s telling you the answer himself.

Yea….but don’t let that stop the “good enough last year” crowd from coming on here. Unlike some, I’m not just paying attention to what he SAYS, but I’m actually paying attention to what he DOES also. 3-5, last place, and with the most returning starters in the conference in and of itself squarely tells you we have a huge coaching issue.

Notice how Michael, Robert, and Hey Champ become even more silent as the season progresses. I’ve said it many times, and I’m going to say it again. Unless Gundy has an NFL caliber OC or BB caliber DC on his staff he’s not coming close to winning the conference. Even then, it still becomes a long shot for him.

If Gundy was serious about winning championships, he would have turned down the $2 million dollar raise two years ago and used that money to keep Jim Knowles around. oSu could have made Knowles the highest paid defensive coordinator above $1.5 million. Then Gundy could have used rest of that money to lure back Monken with a salary above $1.5 million and the designation of offensive coordinator and head coach in waiting.

This would have cemented Gundy as the greatest head coach in Oklahoma State history and we probably could have won at least one more conference title and possibly played in a playoff game.

However, the biggest problem with Gundy is his PRIDE. He thinks he can coach up any ordinary coach to greatness, that’s why he rarely ever fires coaches and hires unknown division 3 coaches who were previously fired just the season before.

Proverbs 16:18

Pride comes before destruction, and an arrogant spirit before a fall.
10/26/24 oSu vs Baylor

Gundy believes he is brilliant and the special sauce for the success of the program. When he doesn’t have any solid to great coordinators to carry the water, we struggle to win games.

Weiberg will need to sit down with Gundy and communicate exactly what is expected and ask Gundy how he plans to achieve it. If Gundy’s response doesn’t involve sweeping or drastic changes to his staff, then oSu needs to talk RETIREMENT. Additionally, oSu must STOP THE ROLLOVER no matter what. If Gundy wants the rollover back, then he has to earn it (but you at least start his clock).

Gundy’s PRIDE has always been an issue and sometimes it creeps up when he’s not held in check by the athletic director. For some reason, his PRIDE thinks he can take any coach and make them successful under his guidance.

Everyone knows BOTH Dunn & Nardo are over their heads. For the rest of this season, Gundy MUST demote Nardo and Dunn. This might give the team HOPE and know that things will change. For the interim Gundy should select Tim Rattay for the interim offensive coordinator. On defense, Gundy should go with Joe Bob Clements as the interim defensive coordinator.

OFFENSE

  1. Gundy should also try hiring Dana Holgorsen for the offensive coordinator position to finish the season once he’s able to get up to speed. He is currently at TCU as a defensive analyst.

  2. Fire offensive line coach Dickey, then temporarily make McEndoo the offensive line coach for the rest of the year. Have Glidden or Walsh take over the tight ends and fullbacks.

DEFENSE

  1. Gundy should try hiring Gary Patterson as the defensive coordinator for this year. He is currently at Baylor as a consultant.

  2. Once Nardo is demoted to linebackers coach, fire Randolph and move Clements back to the DL. Once Gary Patterson gets up to speed, he can coach the linebackers and you can move Nardo to analyst.
