'He's Doing Fine': Gundy Discusses Defensive Coordinator Bryan Nardo

Hey Bruce! When you let your ego get in the way of sound decision making then there is a problem. I could list many many instances but this would be for another day.
After attending multiple practices in the past Flores is really good! Even as a freshman it was evident to me he was better than Bowman and Rangel. But he elects to go with Bowman who was definitely the least of the three but had the experience. (Mike’s history in selecting the best QB is very much in debate)! Sounds like Flores is coming back to compete for the job but I am concerned about the supporting cast for next year. Another one of Mike’s deficiencies is his lackadaisical approach to recruiting. My belief is he has internally rejected the NIL crap - (which I believe has and will continue to devastate the landscape of college football). His heart was never was in recruitment anyway but now it’s a much different ballgame which he lis not prepared to lead. The cupboards are bare for the most part. Mike has had success and a good run but it’s Time - Time for change!

Giving Holgersen full autonomy wasn’t selfless. I have a buddy that hung out with Holgersen at the bars in tulsa. He was told by holgersens own mouth that he had a conversation with Gundy and told him if he even questioned his play calling or tried to interject his opinions or overrule him for any reason he would pack his sh** and went as far as to say he walk out of the pressbox in the middle of the game. Our issue is Gundy’s ego. And his coaches reflect that as all of them are spineless limpfish men who dont have the balls to put Gundy in his place. I suspect Knowles was similar to Holgersen in that sense and thats why Gundy chose to let Knowles go for 100k when he could have paid him the extra out of his own pocket to keep him…remember that man said weeks before knowles left that he would do absolutely everything in his power to keep us relevent and at the top of the sport…weeks later knowles was gone over 100k. His ego has run off as many coordinators as he has hired. Its getting stale.

Have another idea:
Let Gundy retire - hire Josh Henson as our head coach - hopefully hire Holgy or Zach Robinson as OC or both and bring back Jim Knowles with incentives

Zac will NEVER (jmho) leave the NFL coaching fast track to come back to the college ranks to deal with the portal, NIL, recruiting, parents, etc… But I would love it if he did, I think. lol

Okay, it was selfless only for a time. But we agree that ONE TIME in his ego-centric tenure, Gundy did swallow his ego and hire Holgy despite having to hate the conditions on the hire. I loved knowing Holgy would tell him to shut up on the headset!! lol When the credit for our success at the time wasn’t going to Gundy, he regurgitated his ego back up… and has been puking on the program in some form or fashion and to some degree ever since. jmho.

But, yeah, the Holgy hiring was an attempt at selflessness, the only one on record.

I do appreciate you giving all the scuttle butt that I had heard more credence via Holgy’s bar talk too. Holgy is worse than Gundy as a head coach. But what an offensive coordinator!! Would welcome him back in that capacity with open arms and a refrigerated truck full of RedBull!!

“Stale” is putting it nicely, sir.

I will say again, we ‘sucked’ last year too!! Our record was better than we were. I was irate with our play after 3, maybe 4, wins!!

If you wish to make references and comparisons know your subject! SABAN

I do agree with you that changes are needed. I’m not smart enough to know what they need to be though. I don’t have the facts on what is going on with the program and my football acumen is trash. If you are right about everything else that you say, and I don’t think you are BTW, then OSU is missing out by not having you as the HC. Go pokes!!

Don’t have a clue as to what you are talking about. I’m guessing I’m a moron somehow. Yea I can be that at times.

Experience over talent. Even if the experience sucks :+1:. That’s the Gundy way.

The issue with that is Ohio State has a lot more money and incentives to offer compared to OSU. Knowles has had top 10 defenses there since he arrived in 2022. If he keeps that up Ohio State will do everything they can to hold onto him.

I agree!

You are correct! I have already been told he will absolutely not leave NFL due to NIL and transfer portal…he has no interest.

Per what I have heard from people close to the situation, OC, DC and Oline coach are all gone at season end. So depending on who we get, next year will more than likely be a rebuild.

Thanks for the confirmation. It would seem that NIL and the transfer portal will actually erode the quality of coaching available. It is a small blessing that the NFL only needs so many coaches. Zac, Monken (just two with OSU ties) among countless others no doubt will never come back to the college ranks barring extremely extenuating circumstances.

This seems like a no brainer for anyone with a good gig making good money in the NFL. Why would any of these folks want to come to the unregulated NIL/portal/pay for play/media run mess of a league that is currently college football. One might consider a job with one of the half dozen or so BB teams who are in on the fix so to speak, but even those jobs seem like they are way harder than they need to be in the current environment.
