It’s reasonable to expect every player to enter the portal. What’s the downside to the player? Maybe it’s not being pursued by another program and then not being re-recruited by O-State. The upside is the potential for more options.

It’s all good.

I love your optimism, but it’s quite a stretch to say “it’s all good”.

We might have lost Garrison even if we had kept Boynton, but it’s clear that it weighed in his decision. Losing him just made the chances for improvement next year that much more difficult. And getting the best available coach. Now, any prospective coach is going to know the hill here is that much steeper.

The portal, and even more so the NIL deals, have made college sports that much worse.

Yup. Sadly, my interest in college sports diminishes with each passing year now due to the portal and NIL crap.

I am not familiar with NIL details, but like a free agent in pro ball, why aren’t there multi-year deals that pay more are the years go on?

It’s only just begun…

Pretty sure since NIL isn’t technically pay for play that a player can transfer freely and you’d still owe them the money even if they’re at a different school.

They should take their Cadillacs away as soon as they put their name in the portal.

A couple of thoughts:

  1. Garrison is in the portal, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s gone. He could, conceivably, still end up back on our roster. That’s not likely, but it is possible;

  2. What exactly are we holding on to, anyway? We went 12-20 and were pitiful on the defensive end. Yes, I liked the flashes of potential in players like Garrison, Dailey, Williams, Keller, and McBride. But if any of those decide they don’t want to be here, then go. We’ll go into the portal and find their replacement.
