‘This place, it’s a place that I’ve always envisioned and wanted to be in if it was ever a possibility.’
I’ve posted before that John Smith is all about championships and that also is the expectation of the Cowboy wrestling fans. But that just ain’t happening any longer and I’ve been wondering how long can John can tolerate less than success at the highest level? I think that he plans to retire as soon as Sam Smith is finished wrestling for OSU. It makes sense that he would want to be succeeded by a former Cowboy. That is how you convince a current head coach to drop down to an assistant coach. That’s the carrot that was dangled. John knows that he probably is never going to out recruit Cael Sanderson. It would be great if John becomes the color analyst on ESPN+ Cowboy matches after retirement. I think after he retires he becomes involved with international wrestling in some coaching capacity. Either way, he’s done in 4 or 5 more years. You can only motivate yourself for so long when your program is no longer at the top. Having to settle for coaching All Americans instead of national champions is taking its toll. He made hay in the period after Gable retired and before Sanderson started his dynasty.
This guy knows the meaning of Loyal and True
Of course he’s the successor. Why would anyone leave a HC gig, at a nice uni and area, to become less that the top guy, without a promise of that? And Scott will become a very good HC for us IMO. He’s done an amazing job at UNC, and hopefully when Smith’s time is up, will fix what needed fixing at oSu.
Cowboy wrestling is in good hands moving forward. Coleman is the right guy for the job when John’s time is up. John has done so many great things for Cowboy wrestling and Coleman will continue the great tradition. I can’t think of anyone I would want more than Coleman. I’m hoping he can get the best talent with his connections to the East and still be able to get the best kids in this region. He’ll definitely be able to coach them up.
