'I Want Somebody to Take Control': Gundy Discusses Quarterback Competition

‘Hopefully somebody will take control and show us the production we’re looking for.’

Here is how I see it using logic only - no inside information. Rangel is good, but inconsistent and has shown he is not the guy to depend on. Smith has potential, but showed he is not yet ready for the big time yet. Flores apparently has shown himself in practice to be ready to take charge and start. Hejny is the running quarterback Gundy knows he needs to be successful in the Big 12. The bottom line: Hejny and Flores are competing for the starting position. Smith and Rangel are good guys but are in the second tier. Rangel will bail out in the April portal.

“ Gundy said. “I don’t get into your reps. I didn’t get into quarterback reps – I don’t get into quarterback reps – I never have here. But I did explain to them what I thought was best, and then you guys gotta handle it from that point.”

Mike:roll_eyes:…… please don’t give them your opinion. What was best 15 years ago doesn’t necessarily mean that’s what’s best right now :+1:. If we continued to stick with what you thought was best. I’d imagine either Kasey Dunn, Bryan Nardo, or possibly both would still be lingering around Stillwater :ok_hand:.

I agree :100: percent.

My reason for being pre-disposed to Rangel: he has stayed locked-in here during a pretty chaotic and unsettled time at QB. He could have easily bailed two years ago, but he didn’t. Then, none of us would have wished him anything but the best if he left this time last year, but he didn’t.

Stick-to-itiveness seems to be in his DNA. That’s the kind of guy I want in my bunker.

So in a room that already had 3 close competitors, what promises did they make to Hejny that helped land him in Stillwater? It had to be some sort of sales pitch. What was it?

“I want somebody to take control”

The biggest lie he’s told YTD.

Hopefully he does the right thing and lets someone else make the decision who’s QB1, cause he ain’t the best at it.

Rangel showed in the BYU game, and I was one of his biggest doubters, he can run w/ it. Not sure what you saw. What have we seen from Heyny passing wise to say it’s between him and Flores? I think we should’ve seen some game action from Flores last season before he got hurt instead of the geezer who hurt us big time…

You could’ve dogged him further with mention of Bobby Reid, Alex Cate and Bowman. You’re too nice of a guy I guess, lol.

Yeah, I’ve never understood why Gundy put our highest ranked recruit of all time in charge of the offense. In hindsight, it seems obvious that Les Miles didn’t know what he was doing recruiting and we should’ve stocked the whole pantry with Gundy guys and let those holdover jokers walk.

I wouldn’t blame him if he went to like North Texas or some place like that though. He’s pretty much been here for three seasons already. That’s more than most to be quite honest. If he decided to jet to another place to possibly start his last season of football I really couldn’t blame him.

“Prentiss Elliot is the best player I’ve seen here, with the ball in his hands, since Barry Sanders”

Mike Gundy, Tulsa World, June 10, 2024

Seems like Gundy agrees with Les Miles that Elliot’s talent couldn’t be ignored. So to say Les didn’t quite know what he was doing when it came to recruiting seems like a stretch. After all, Miles wasn’t given millions of dollars during his tenure to help improve the image and prestige of the OSU football program during his tenure.

Outside of a couple of years, Gundy has recruited pretty much on the same pace that Bob Simmons did, or maybe a little better. Which is probably one reason why we’re still stuck with one conference title after 20 years under Gundy :man_shrugging:.

Hey champ,

That was sarcasm. Way to miss the joke.

It’s tough to notice since you seem to be all over the place.

What I took from this article is that Gundy is finally admitting that he is incapable of picking the best starting QB and asked his assistants to do it.

Learning has occurred.

Agreed. I think Rangel is still in a position to compete for Qb1

The promise that he has an opportunity to continue to work with his same OC. In addition, it’s not like if he don’t start this year he is going to transfer. It just wouldn’t make any sense to be on 3 teams in 3 years. And if he did transfer, then he obviously isn’t meant to be QB1 in Stillwater. He obviously has the opportunity to win the job this year, no doubt, but if he don’t win it, I see him coming back next year.

It’s funny how people here talk about hitting the portal like it’s a walk in the park no brainier or some kind of sword of Damocles hanging over the coaching staff. Me thinks the smart players give it a ton of thought before jumping in and many that do do so because they are given a little assistance.
