Game played just like I expected, so I didn’t get upset about it. It showed every weakness the team has. And showed us what good recruiting and good coaches can accomplish. We have neither. Nardo’s defense not the right fit. Dunn’s play calling more appropriate for high school games. Bowman was never gonna be the answer. So Gundy does deserve his award since it’s a miracle a team like this notched 9 wins. Texas is back.
Gundy has no choice about having to score big with a portal QB who can throw with accuracy. The unknown RB looked pretty good. We better hope we draw an unranked opponent for the bowl game.
We can’t score big for a portal QB. We don’t have any million dollar NIL deals available, and (per Rhule) thats the going rate. I imagine that we go with Flores as QB with Gundy as backup and whomever we bring in as a freshman, and that Rangel transfers.
Has there been any announcement if Bowman got that extra year or not? Yeah I think Rangel is hitting the portal and wouldn’t be surprised if he’s the first on this team to announce it.
I’m expecting him and Nixon to portal along with a two or three of the starting O-linemen. But I’m not familiar enough with the players to really guess which ones love OSU through-and-through, which are dissatisfied with their usage and which ones will chase the NIL $$$s. For example, last year I was sure that Gordon would transfer because of how we failed to use him. And was completely surprised by Cobb and Ford transferring. So I’m treating this year as a wait and see.
You can see our annual issue, which is always depth. We lose Stripling and now it’s former tight end as our deep threat. Korie Black goes down and Gundy says we now have 4 freshman in the defensive secondary. Jaydon Nixon goes down and it’s “unknown 3rd string running back”.
Last year our Oline went down in mass. We don’t have backups for each position. We just move everyone around and fill in our next best guy. Hence we were terribly inconsistent up front and not very successful.
This year our Oline was relatively healthy. We did lose one guy though so we didn’t have any capacity for another injury. We survived and were successful. Ollie was the leading rusher in the nation. So him or them, they still did it together.
Spencer Sanders stupidly transfers and what do we have? Nice guys but not players that instill the confidence in me that they are going to go out there and win games. Bowman transferred in and couldn’t even clearly beat out Rangel and Gunnar.
I will say Nick Martin was a nice addition to replace our other linebacker that left, and our linebackers were pretty decent this year overall. That may just be a function of the overall defensive scheme that I didn’t really like.
I would love to see PFB’s grades on the different aspects for the entire season.
While you aren’t wrong about depth being an issue, one of the ways you build depth is by blowing the doors off bad teams so your second and third team guys get reps during the season. Even when we played bad teams, we couldn’t blow anyone’s doors off.
If Georgia wins then UT isn’t really getting screwed. But if Bama wins, they aren’t being left out by the committee, and UT fans would melt down en masse.
I agree. That’s their opportunity. Gundy now thinks he has to sacrifice the best players and possibly the season to play second teamers in the first 3 real games. Will that attract portal players? Maybe that’s the new model (along with who pays the most)
The other issue is Gundy will NOT run up the score. He just runs 3 times and punts when he is way ahead.
You may be right about Rangel. I don’t think any off them got a fair shake with Dunn as OC. That said, my one complaint with Bowman was his inability to check out of a play. I would have expected a senior like him to be able to read press coverage and check out of a quick slant, or read a light box and check into a handoff to Gordon. I just never saw him audible away from what would be an obvious failed play against certain defensive looks.
All I know is that I don’t want to hear any more excuses that Texas and Oklahoma are what’s preventing us from winning a conference title any longer. That ship has finally sailed. I’m sure we will though.
Gundy said that if Houston ever got in the B12, he would have a hard time recruiting any players from the state of Texas. With a new coach, they may be the team that gets the best players. Hard to think it could ever surpass the traditions of OU and Texas. Texas A&M might be a similar type of comparison. They seem to recruit better as an SEC team. It’s probably all about the NIL money nowadays. We want a good team, we have to pay up.
Ok here is a dose of reality. Aside from some kind of “lighting in a bottle” type of event we i.e, OSU, are never going to to compete at the elite level of college football. End of discussion End of story. The only way that changes is if college football adopts an NFL style of Revenue sharing model or something similar that allows for everyone to compete at the same level. Until that happens get used to never winning on the big stage. Hire all the Great HC, OC or DC’s that you want it’s not going to change our standing in things one iota. Sad but true.
One big thing though. OU and Texas did NOT share revenue equally with the rest of the conference. They got an extraordinary share of the revenue. The fact the B12 will not be transparent about that sharing tells you all you need to know.
Will we make more money without those two schools in the conference than we did with the unequal revenue sharing?
Will we get a Pokes network like UT’s Longhorn network? Do we have rich donors or a large enough fanbase to bring in money?
Don’t know where you are coming from here but until we can spend as many dollars on a player as Alabama we are never going to win a natty. End of discussion end of story.
