A look at OSU’s 1984 Gator Bowl win and Hanna’s miraculous TD.
I was there at the Gator Bowl that night. Most of the contingent of Cowboy fans were sitting behind Hanna’s play in the opposite end zone.. From our vantage point, my Dad and I couldn’t see if he had scored right away, but after every TD, they shot off fire works and they did it one more time. It was an iconic TD that capped off our first 10 win season.
Great article! Unfortunately, I was at what should have been the greatest TD ever: Brent Parker ![]()
Absolutely the most iconic play in Cowboy football history. If memory serves me Pat wore his “cool as they get”pull over.
OKLAHOMA AGGIES
Yep…me too. Such a guy punch. I had nightmares for years…
GO POKES!!
Highest ranking we ever had after that win, 5th, right?! Apart from that gift-horse nat’l champion, but I’ll take that too, but they didn’t rank teams then, no? That team was nice! BTW, RIP Rusty Hilger…
AP began ranking teams in 1938.
OSU finished 3rd in 2011
Call it recency bias, but I think it’s Tyreek in 2014 Bedlam.
Or Rashaun in 2001.
I actually have a painting (yes a painting) depicting this. It’s pretty iconic.
A TD by a guy who was kicked out of school 5 days later, who scored the game winner against arguably the worst OU team in over a decade at that point, to push the Cowboys record to 6-6. Thats iconic?? Dramatic? Sure. Memorable? Absolutely. Iconic? I cant quite understand that
As an OU fan, that one stings. It kept OU from likely playing for a chance to get their a** kicked by Miami. If I recall, OU was 31 pt favorites? Win and you go to the Big 12 Championship against Colorado for an opportunity to go to the Nat Title game against Miami ( who likely wouldve drilled OU). Most OU fans dont remember or care about the Tyreek game. But we ALL remember the Rashaun Woods TD in 01.
Rashaun Woods catch in 2001 was iconic. Everyone remembers that catch. They can replay it in their mind. This is a cool article, but if you have to go through and describe everything about the catch and the play then by definition, it was not iconic. You would just say the iconic Barry Hanna catch. All you Gotta say is Rashaun Woods 2001 and everybody knows what you’re talking about.
That was the longest drive back to Tulsa I’ve ever had
Some say he’s still open.
I was at all of those early 2000 Bedlams. Ive told this story before, but the 2002 Bedlam game was when I realized that this had turned into a very real rivalry. My sister was a Freshman at OSU and I was confident that OU was going to roll. I changed my voicemail on my phone to me talking noise while Boomer Sooner played in the background. That mfer was over EARLY. Pretty sure it started out 35-6 at one point. Absolute a** whippin
Yeah it was 35-6 at one point. I was at that game as well, and it was my last OSU home game I attended as a student.
Before the game started, I assumed that OU would come out looking for some payback from the year before.
Once the game started, it was like OSU could do no wrong and OU could do no right. It was surreal.
Exactly. I was just done with my playing days and it was the first Bedlam I attended as a “nobody”. The 00 game I felt like OSU was in their “Win one for the Gipper” stage. 01’ I blamed on OU overlooking the Cowboys and really felt like 02’ was going to be a situation in which OU flexed their muscle. Again, that day was I think for most people my when we realized Bedlam was a now a full on rivalry. Its been that way ever since. 03’ was what I thought would happen in 02’.
1 on 1 against Derrick Strait of all backs.
