Im not disagreeing with anything you just said. “The head coach should be the visionary leader and should have seen this kind of thing coming over the horizon and been on it.”
There isnt a coach out there that was a “visionary leader” as it pertained to NIL. Particularly at a place like OSU who didnt have NIL resources available anyway. There are definitely NIL gripes as it pertains to OSU fans, but Gundy wasnt in charge of that. The NIL train was far down the tracks befreo anyone in Stillwater got on board. That isnt solely a Gundy issue, nor should it be.
Dabo comes to mind. He’s a fantastic, multi-time national championship winning coach from a non-blue blood school. Excellent coach. Still, as far as I know, hasn’t adapted.
How exhausting it must be being you. Doing all of those mental gymnastics everyday to put the worst spin on everything just so you can be miserable at the end of the day. Ironically, if we hired a new coach and the new coach was bad, you’d be doing your best to polish that turd for probably a good 3 or 4 years because you wouldn’t want to look like a clown and so you’d be thrilled that our program dropped off.
In my opinion, Oklahoma State does not have the financial resources to compete as a Playoff team on a consistent basis with or without Gundy as head coach. If OSU fires Gundy, and hires some hot, fast-rising coach, he will be reined in on recruiting due to lack of either NIL or school funded money. If this new coach is successful in Stillwater, the coach will leave for greener pastures just like Jimmy Johnson and Les Miles did. If the coach were an OSU alum maybe that changes things a bit. Can OSU win the conference more often, sure they can, do they have an edge over most of the schools in their peer driven be conference? Not many. I just think that OSU will kick the can around the yard and rise and fall but not really ascend the college football hierarchy.
That depends on your definition of “compete”? Can OSU compete to win the Big 12 Conf on a yearly basis? Given the teams that are within this COnf…I say yes. There isnt a team within this Conf that is a better program than OSU. So, if they can legitimately have the ability to contend to win the Big 12 Conf every year…then they can at least get into the playoff. Can they be talented enough to win 3 games? No.
“If OSU fires Gundy…” I HATE this statement. Fear of hiring a hot, young, successful coach because youre afraid of him having success and then leaving for a better job…is so ignorant to me. Its the same thing with hiring coordinators. Its the same thing with signing players. OSU is a stepping stone job. Thats not a knock. Its just fact. Now with the portal and NIL, OSU is in some circumstances going to be a stepping-stone school for some players. SO WHAT!!! You still want to hire the best coach you possibly can. You want to sign the best players you possibly can. Dont you want them to be successful? Isnt that the idea? Isnt that the goal?
I don’t think Oklahoma State football can be as successful as you want them to be.
You just said can they compete to win the B12 on a yearly basis? I don’t think they can. They don’t have much of an edge if at all on about 10 other schools, so how can they rise above all the other teams consistently?
I don’t think any of them are better. When Boone Pickens provided the donation to build the stadium and resources, OSU had a big edge among many of their conference brothers -OU & Texas excluded. As well, I think Rob Glass conditioning program and Gundy’s ability to develop players gave us some advantages.
Now that player development and facilities are playing second fiddle to money being paid directly to players, how can OSU stand apart from the rest of the league? OSU is middle of the pack in athletic budget. I don’t know that OSU donors are any better than other colleges. We saw this past year how chaotic the B12 standings were. Why would OSU consistently play for the conference title regardless of who the head coach is? You want to believe OSU should compete for the title every year? What do you base your expectations on? How does OSU upgrade their roster versus the top half of the league.
" Now that player development and facilities are playing second fiddle to money being paid directly to players, how can OSU stand apart from the rest of the league? " Who in the Big 12 is on a different level than OSU? OSU is on par with the rest of this league when it comes to the football program. Theyre in the upper echelon within the Big 12. You are stuck in this mindset of what OSU is compared to the SEC or the big boys outside of the Big 12. But within this Conf, there is not a better program than OSU.
“Why would OSU consistently play for the conference title regardless of who the head coach is? You want to believe OSU should compete for the title every year? What do you base your expectations on?” My expectations are based on what this program has been for 20 years.
Again, what program is better than OSU within this Conf when you combine facilities, pay for coaches, sustainable success over the last 20 years, NIL is on par with the rest of the league. Im not saying OSU WILL OR SHOULD DOMINATE this league. But why cant OSU be in competition to win the league every year? Iowa St and Arizona St just did it. Why cant OSU?
" How does OSU upgrade their roster versus the top half of the league." Arizona St, BYU, Iowa St, Colorado, Baylor, Texas Tech. OSU has been better over the last 20 years than those guys…so why all of a sudden do you think they cant?
You ask who in the B12 is different level. No one. That means that up to 10 teams could win the conference each year. I’m not stuck in any mindset. You are stuck in the mindset that OSU should compete for the B12 every year and then become upset when they don’t perform to your expectations.
“The last 20 years” dude the rules have changed. OSU cannot operate the way they have been. Money is everything, and that is where we are just in the top ten in the league. Are you paying attention to the rule changes? I count OSU at 8th in the B12 in athletic budget (although we don’t know about Baylor or TCU). Can OSU compete for the title ? But every year? What makes OSU stand out today? Not the last 20 years. Today?
I’m just trying to figure out how many coaches that claim they want nothing less than a championship actually go out, and hire a D2 coach with no experience at all? Maybe you can inform us on how exactly that works?
As far as money , when the revenue sharing comes into play, if the PWAP can raise a significant amount of money plus 20 million is what’s being talked about I the money to compete. I really don’t see Gundy coaching very much longer. Two years at tops, maybe less than that if we have a repeat of last year
I’m going to agree with Ketchup, there aren’t any other schools in the B12 that we aren’t as good or better program….
As far as winning a playoff game would require a tandem of another Weeden and Blackmon
Most kids don’t blossom till they are 20 or more
You say there aren’t many teams in the B12 that are better than us. If there are 8-10 teams that win a title then odds go down significantly. Kansas St, Baylor, Texas Tech, TCU, Arizona St, Colorado, Utah, BYU, Iowa St maybe Kansas. It’s going to become more difficult to separate from this pack, because these schools have similar athletic budgets and possibly donors. Facilities don’t matter as much. Culture doesn’t matter. Development takes a back seat. So why is OSU better than these programs? Because of what we did in 2011? That ancient history now.
