Cowboys take blame for defensive issues in Ames.
It’s not just about calling the right plays. It’s having the players ready to execute them. I couldn’t believe last night with Horn looking over at the sideline as ISU is snapping the ball, by the time he caught up with the guy he was supposed to be covering, ISU had what, 50 yards?
It is a him issue, but the fact that the players want to have his back is a positive sign
You don’t have to like a coach, but you can respect a coach. Then, eventually, you learn to like that coach because you realize what’s he’s doing for you. That’s exactly the kind of coach Nick Saban was and what we need on defense.
Cassity seems like he’s a player’s coach and just lets his players execute however the hell they feel like (especially in the first half). I don’t get that kind of vibe with our offense outside of the Tulsa and Houston game. This has been going on with our defense since the Oregon game though.
That’s a direct indication on the kind of coach you have and what his seriousness level is with his players. There’s no sense of urgency to start the game off with a solid effort. I don’t know about you guys, but for me last night was a combination of things. Not only did Cassity’s scheme suck balls the entire night, but the player execution was putrid as well.
What’s with the giving an 8 yd cushion when you have a 3rd and 5 ? Is if a novel idea of finding the dam ball at any point? Shith they were just throwing it up and letting a receiver run under it. We didn’t have a clue where thd flight was. I would think after so many bad games Cassidy could have them ready at the start. We really have little talent at db smdh !! Oh I left one out. Can we set an edge ?? How many off tackle yards did Flores get off tackle
He did that at North Texas last year as well. It sucked then and it really sucks now. I never understood the hire and, unfortunately, my fears have been realized. No idea why Morris brought him along with him. He’s not ready for this level. Zero adjustments at half time and zero pressure on a very average QB. No blitzes to help out a horrible secondary.
It’s because he’s brought his American conference mentality with him. Where you just hope your offense can make up where your defense can’t. He hasn’t figured out that the Big 12 in recent years has become more invested on the defensive side of the ball (Arizona, Utah, Baylor, BYU, TCU). Even Colorado at times depending on which weekend it is.
He said at the beginning of the season “We’ve been able to force a lot of turnovers where we’ve been”. Okay, but you aren’t guaranteed turnovers that’s not a realistic strategy for your defense. OSU’s turnover ratio is -2 this season. OSU had a -1 turnover ratio in 2021. The biggest difference was that Jim Knowles defense made STOPS!!!
Knowles perfected the basic fundamentals on defense and it was a huge reason why they were so good. Cassity’s defense looks like it plays pee-wee football to start and doesn’t take anything seriously until the second half, and sometimes not at all. It’s the Kasey Dunn version of defense.
That’s on the coaches IMO, he was looking over at them cause they were yelling at him I would think. They weren’t ready for that trick play, just like they weren’t for the onside kick…
How many times did we blitz the entire game? Someone said once, I don’t remember it. Either way our D made Raynor look like Mensah or Chambliss instead of guy who played at Ark State last season and got benched the previous game. He was NEVER uncomfortable in the pocket, not once. How long does it take to make adjustments? We had issues sealing the edge and while that ISU RB, Flora, is good, he ain’t that good!
Sorry, but that effort is ALL on the coaches IMO and since Cassity is the DC well, he needs to improve.
I don’t disagree, but players are also a direct reflection of the guy who coaches them too. Do you think Saban would allow his DC to let guys play peewee football? Hell no!!!
My point is that it shouldn’t take an entire half of football to get warmed up when you know how capable you are of playing to a good level. It’s both the coaches and players imo.
Not only did the players look lackadaisical on defense, but Cassity’s scheme looked atrocious. When we rush 3 and play zone coverage it’s almost like it doesn’t matter. We switched to rush 4 and man coverage against Colorado with a few blitzes in that game.
What I had seen on Saturday reminded me of the 2012 Bill Young defense where we couldn’t stop anyone. Playing 8 yards off a dude on 3rd and 4? Really? Even if the scheme sucked and you can’t stop freshman from Iowa State or a QB that might be the worst in the conference then that’s on you as the players. I would also say the scheme certainly didn’t help them either.
