‘The reference to religion did not meet our standards and expectations.’
…expel or suspend…
Not that it matters now (and maybe I’m wrong) but, to me, the comments from the university following their investigation imply that “ref’s a Mormon” was the more likely chant. They still obviously found it unacceptable and had to issue the fine but, obviously, that’s much better than what was originally alledged.
I applaud the university’s response.
So what did they say, F the Mormons or the “Ref’s a Mormon!” Huge difference there. ![]()
From what I’ve gleaned the student(s) was trying to do a clever play on words and said “Refs a Mormon” because of a bad call.
I had never even heard the other quote the BYU coach introduced/cited. I may have always sat in the wrong areas at football and basketball games but I’ve never heard the f word at a game. Perhaps I’m just fortunate?![]()

Yeah and 50k is really not much. Its an admission that something was chanted that hurt some feelings, but also an indication that it wasnt all that bad. Its the price of doing business with BYU.
Listen to the audio. It’s undeniably “Refs a Mormon”. Pretty clever kind of like “Refs a Baptist”(Baylor). They need to chill out.
Yeah, that’s a nothingburger. We should buy $50k of Preparation H and send it to the BYU athletic department.
