Oklahoma State Quarterback Gunnar Gundy Reportedly Enters Transfer Portal

I hope that happens for the kid. He deserves to play somewhwere.

I never understood why he didn’t just take his one and only D1 offer from Eastern Michigan. We all knew (well….the fans not blinded by the orange shades) that he was hardly going to see the field. Good luck to him wherever he goes.

If you watched those first three games. You would be asking yourself WHY he was playing more than Rangel.

It won’t be. Because he’s not good enough to get playing time at K State. Not saying it to bash the kid, but he belongs at a G5 school in a crappy conference if he ever wants any hope of starting somewhere.

Do I think OU will win the Cof within 12 years? Man that’s tough. Waaaay too many variables. But I’ll say yes, just based solely on the fact that LSU, Florida, Auburn have shown the capability to do it……so I think one could assume that OU could as well. But again, just so nobody takes this as me being a typical homer here……I see OU being what LSU is. They’ll contend. But they’ll also mix in some 7-5/8-4 at times. Saban isn’t staying forever & when he leaves, it’ll bring Bama closer to the pack.

If OU averaged 4th, will the fanbase be content? Of course not. No chance. There isn’t a fanbase outside of Vanderbilt in that Conf that is content with that.

I don’t disagree with that. I’m just saying it’s the age old question of “do you want to start/play at an Eastern Mich? Or do you want to live the D-1 life & be a backup at a Power 5?”

It just seemed to me that he actually got some PT this season, and judging by the forum, a ton of people think he’s good enough to start. Just seemed like if he were wanting to play……he could’ve/should’ve left sooner than now. Just my thoughts.

I watched the ASU game. I thought Rangel last year showed signs of being a pretty good QB. So I was surprised to see him getting the scraps of the snaps early on.

Probably looking for a starting job at a G5 or FCS school I would imagine. He’s not a P5 starter.

I think he’s putting himself AND OSU first here . I wish him well. He’s a Cowboy forever and always .

I said all along Gunnar should NOT go to oSu. I wasn’t very high on the kid in HS, not to say he wasn’t a good HS QB, I just didn’t see him ever being a QB1 at a school like ours. BUT, and before you grill me, he improved a lot, esp his foot speed. I thought a Tulsa-type school would’ve offered him and it’s ridiculous they and others did not. I could see him play for a Memphis, a USF, UTSA, MAC school, etc.

But more than anything, he seems like a very good kid! Best wishes, I hope he kicks tail at his next stop.

@jeff42 I personally don’t think Mike wanted Gunnar to play at oSu. He left it up to Gunnar, who really should’ve gone elsewhere, but his heart was oSu. He’s been there, done that…go get some PT somewhere else FTW, get away from mom, see another part of the country and grow up.

He wouldn’t get much. To me he outplayed both Bowman and Rangel and deserved to start the next game when they were juggling all three, and he barely played the next game. Mike’s bending over backwards to not show favoritism.

Plus oSu has Zane Flores, if he sticks around, and another 4-star QB in Maealiuaki Smith coming in. I’d like to see Bowman move on and either Flores or Rangel to start…gonna be rough though, but neither of those two kids will ever get better and one will leave after 2024, I wouldn’t be surprised if Rangel puts himself in the portal also after the bowl game, if Bowman stays…

I never thought that way about him at all. The kid is a good runner, but that’s really about it. He threw probably one or two good deep passes this season, but overall he wasn’t convincing enough to me that he could be a starter for even a bad P5 school. I’m not so sure he would ever start at a lot of G5 schools.

I really thought Rangel got the short end of the stick in the first three games. He looked the more relaxed under pressure, threw decent, and rarely made terrible mistakes. If you watch his pocket presence compared to the other two it was clear he knew what to do in the pocket far better than the other two.

He’s also had more experience than Backfoot and Gundy most recently. It’s just kind of funny to me how the argument seems to be “experience matters”. I guess it does……unless your name is Garrett Rangel :man_shrugging:.

NM State was a revelation this season, but people who know about Jerry Kill, knew he’s an incredible coach, I heard about him when he was at Pitt State. But that’s not gonna be a school Gunnar can start at, did you see their game vs Liberty? Diego Pavia, their QB1 is amazing, dude’s got some serious wheels and passing isn’t great, but good enough for what they do. I saw one of their games before Liberty and had never heard of that kid. He’s got one more year…not an NFL type QB, but I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t make a roster, I’d draft him as a slot guy in the later rounds if I’m an NFL GM.

I doubt Venables is gonna make it. I say that, cause of OU fans’ expectations. You’re right about Bama and Saban, he’s not gonna coach more than 5, 6 seasons I would think. Don’t wanna be like Woody Hayes or a coach like that, course Woody got fired for hitting a Clemson player, retire and then die soon after. Dude has major loot, he should go buy an island or some land in a tropical place and lay on the beach half the day. Get caught up on some reading, pay for your kids to bring over the grandkids 2, 3 times a year.

Woody Hayes was a pretty good dude actually.

I don’t know. These guys bust their ass to play football and I assume the thought of riding the bench for 4 or 5 years is not appealing. If I’m going to bust my ass I want to play and wherever I can find a starting job is where I’m going to go. I’m sure Dad told him that he’s not going to play much at OSU. Plus, he’s been around the D-1 life for most of his life. It’s probably less of a big deal to him than it would be to us fans.

I think that’s a pretty fair assessment. I just wonder how long it will last. OU has a top 5 winning percentage all time and probably has a top 3 percentage the last 25 years. I think after a few years the new wears off and the trade off of a few more dollars for a few more mediocre season won’t be worth it the OU fan base and donors and they will want to go back somewhere they can consistently win 10+ games because people enjoy winning and OU doesn’t NEED the SEC money.

That’s where we sit in the big 12 (a conference that’s light years behind SEC) no conference championship in 12 years and average 4th for 19.

Wasn’t his last play a td pass ?

Good luck Gunnar!
