Outwit, Outplay, Outlast

Great! I get that as part of my YouTubeTV package. I’ll be sure to add it to my shows to watch library tonight.

Micronesia was insanity. So was David vs Goliath.

I loved season 2 though. This was so heavily watched and had so many players eventually return. Also it was probably the most grueling, along with the next season (Africa).

the first family season was really good

almost said the winner but didnt want to spoil

That includes all of them, right? Like U.S.A., World, all-stars, etc. I think the main “challenge” show has like 24 seasons or something. I could be wrong though

What do folks think about various Survivor rule changes along the way - various token systems, second chance island, later giving contestants access to rice as a supplement (not done on the original show), etc.?

Great question. I haven’t watched season 1 since I was in 6th grade so I can’t remember exactly how the game starts, but in season 2 the tribes are given a certain amount of money and let loose on a town to barter and buy as much as they can. In that season, at least one of the tribes (thanks to my all time fav) walked into day one like kings and queens. I don’t personally have an issue with contestants being given an opportunity to earn rice for different choices throughout the season because I would rather contestants have the calories they need to stay in the game than be medically evacuated because they’re malnourished. And in my opinion, giving away your vote, or your chance to win immunity is a strategic decision that can make or break a survivors game so I think it’s fine, personally.

I’m not a huge fan of “the shot in the dark” which was introduced post covid though I have seen some really exciting tribals that were impacted by it.

Immunity idols are whatever. They put a target on your back if ANYONE knows you have one, rarely get played effectively, but that’s all part of the fun and games for me.

Exile island and redemption island or whatever are a waste of primetime so get rid of them in my opinion.

I need to get offline. I clearly need to go touch grass today.

Mark it down, folks! Survivor is back on September 18! Looks like 90 minute episodes and a 26-day actual contestant running length are here to stay. I think 90 minutes is good and helps to advance the story better. But I miss the longer island stays that were a bigger physical and mental test.

Also, I got a little behind on recent seasons, so I didn’t know Survivor was still doing the post-BLM era designated diversity requirement to have half the contestants be of specific racial or ethnic backgrounds. I woulda thought a race-based mandate would have been outlawed after the recent court rulings but apparently not. So much for a fully merit-based outwit outplay outlast

You left out the queer community!

What does being queer, black, indigenous or [insert any other demographic trait] have to with being good at Survivor? Or really for any job or position of any kind? I actually am in an under-represented group that would “benefit” from their demographic criteria, but I find it insulting such criteria are in place. Plenty of folks in such groups did well on Survivor before such a hard mandate. Affirmative action for adults does not work IMHO. It’s just another form of discrimination.

As you can tell, I’m for anyone getting opportunity using merit-based criteria. Good Survivor play seems to cut through the demographic crap better than almost anything. It was happening organically with very diverse participants before a mandate.

Oh well, sorry for the side rant.

I was just talking about how the number of contestants who identify as part of the queer community has increased in the new era.

Do you think that increase is implicitly or explicitly due to the Survivor diversity / affirmative action mandate or do you think that is just based on the overall increase in folks identifying as queer nationwide?

If I had to guess, I would say that Survivor is both trying to increase diversity in casting and the show is able to do that because Americans are ethnically and racially diverse. I also think there are more out queer people than there used to be so that could be part of it too. I guess it’s a question of causation or correlation. But those are just vibes on my part. I haven’t done any real research into it. Either way, I’ve enjoyed the casting in the last few seasons.

Yes, I understand what affirmative action is trying to do. I think it is important to have a diverse group. I’m just personally just not a fan over-handed “mandates” and “bean counting” based on demographics. I thought there were really great under-represented players (and even winners) before the mandate. Anyhow, that’s all the more I’m going to say on this specific subject.

Anyhow, I still think you should apply to be on the show! Do it while you are still young!

Sorry, I’m an #old - doubt I’d qualify. Although there have been some some much older than me that did well so you never know

@FoCoPokeOh we should do a survivor fantasy pool or a vote for the winner or something like that for this season in here. Would be fun!

26 days is lame. Significantly reduces the heart of survivor. Relying on strategy along for content is boring to me. I liked watching people dig deep and suffer.
