Predicting the Cowboys’ Friday night matchup against TU.
oSu 23 Tulsa 20. We barely win.
OSU 23
Tulsa 16
I think Kyle’s prediction is more accurate. I don’t trust the coaching or both sides of the ball. I don’t think we’ll lose, but wouldn’t be surprised if we did.
OSU 24-17.
TU 24-21.
Draftkings has a profit boost for this game. I think I am gonna sit that one out.
Yeah, hard to say. If the Oregon game was just a bad spot perfect storm, I think we’ll win somewhat comfortably by 2+ scores.
If we’re really that bad, maybe it’s close.
I tend to think the former, but we’ll find out together.
OSU 16 Tulsa 10
Grumbles old man noises to himself before… ACK
I hope for 41 - 17 OSU.
I expect 24 - 10 to 17. OSU.
Gundy said it himself, Flores needs more college games. He will need time to adjust.
Tulsa hopefully slows the game down some from Oregon. JS.
Honest question. You seem like one of the good ones on here. What would OSU football have to look like this year for you to say its time to get rid of Gundy?
You asked this before. I think I said 8-4 would probably be good enough to keep his job with some exceptions, like if he ended on a winning streak where the team looked good then 7-5 might be good or vice versa finishing 8-4, but on like a 3 game skid might not be enough.
For me, personally? Two losing seasons in a row would be bad. I would’ve understood firing him after last season. I would understand that more than firing him after a mediocre or above average season this year (which I think is maybe the likeliest scenario).
I think the money stopped him from being fired last year and this year was just a money saving measure. Firing him “for cause” was always a bluff and had no chance of making it through court which is why they jumped at his contract renegotiation. He’s not especially set up to succeed this year. Whole new staff, whole new team. It comes off like it’s a calculation to junk this season to save money.
It’s either that or no one stopped to ask himself the question you asked me. Let’s say someone’s benchmark is 9-3. What likelihood is there to achieve that with the complete rehaul? If it’s not likely, they should’ve fired him last year unless they’re thinking he “deserves” a Hail Mary season for his years of service. Keeping him if you don’t believe in him is just extending the skid we’re headed for.
Yeah I knew I had asked, I just didnt know if the current climate changed your stance at all.
Give me your percentages of what you blame the current state of Cowboy football? Lack of NIL, Portal, Gundy, New Staff, Admin Support, Other factors
For me, id say Gundys slow to adjust/stubborness to adjust is about 34%, Portal 33%, NIL 33%. I get that NIL/Portal has really hurt the Cowboys. But I think Gundys approach to it has been the accelerant to the fire.
And listen, im not trolling you in any way. Enjoy the discussion.
Yeah, I don’t know percentages. I might say Gundy has a degree of fault, but he didn’t necessarily do anything wrong. He’s like Dabo Swinney in that regard. When what you’re good at gets erased by rule changes, I don’t think you can necessarily just “adapt”. People always throw that out there like it’s a failing. It’s like when people losing their jobs were told to “learn to code”. There’s a whole aptitude to that and not everyone can do it well. Gundy’s strategy was grab guys with potential and character, develop them over 3-4 years. Swinney’s was high level high school recruiting. Neither works as well now. They can’t necessarily “learn to portal”. You don’t typically ask someone who is great at one thing to do something else and expect comparable greatness. You don’t hire a concert violinist because you think he’s going to be an equivalent level of bricklayer or vice versa… that wall looks clean and pristine, I bet you can nail some Mozart.
So… those things all bleed together to me. It’s not new staff. I think they’ve been good recruiting in the portal, but they’ll take time to gel. That’s a temporary drag on regaining momentum. Anyway… admin support - 25%, Gundy - 25%, portal - 25%, NIL - 25%. It’s all the same issue.
What is it going to take for you Gundy fans to realize that a growing number of OSU fans are sick of Gundy and the underachievements in key areas? What else will the guy have to do, and how else do people here need to express their opinions before you finally believe it?
The dude has one conference title in 21 years (he’s not winning it this season) and two major bowl victories. At what point in time do you start to try and convince your HC it’s not the 80’s any longer and a majority of college football teams make any bowl game now? He literally took his most experienced team he had and went 0-9 in the conference.
Donors and fans are ready to take advantage of the lesser conference and make the CFP. While Gundy will brag about his majority of useless bowls nobody gives a dam about.
35-13 Good guys. Zane’s sharp, defense is solid, and our message board whiners will STILL find reasons to hate on Gundy, etc.
GO POKES!!
Oh, and the climate doesn’t change anything for me because it’s an understandable overreaction to a very bad loss, but that loss was extremely likely to happen (ESPN gave us like a 6% chance to win, probably correct), and among those 94 out of 100 games, 3/4 would probably be a beat down. Yeah, worst loss since statehood. I get it, not a great distinction to hold, but butt kicked is butt kicked. We’d be going just as haywire with a 40 point drubbing.
You’ll find your own reasons once you see him barely win or lose this game. We don’t have to do anything.
Gumby fanboys are special.
Yeah im not really talking specifically just about the Oregon blowout. But I think there is the camp that feels like that game was a one-off, nothing to see here, Gundy is in the process of fixing this thing. There is the other side that feels like the manner in which it happened, combined with the last season of games is just another nail in the coffin that is being created this year.
"When what you’re good at gets erased by rule changes, I don’t think you can necessarily just “adapt”. People always throw that out there like it’s a failing" I respect your side. But I think when it comes to your job, your career, your product…if you simply refuse to adjust, then it can turn in to a failure. Heres two examples in the college football world. One, Venables had a recruiting rule that he brought with him in that if you commited to OU and then went on a visit at any point after that commitment, they took that as you were no longer committed and they moved on. Seemingly “pulling” that offer. Well, it bit them a few times due to NIL stuff and he has since changed course. Two, he initially had a stance of not paying or even discussing NIL with incoming HS recruits. He felt as though you would earn your NIL/money once you get to campus. That method has also changed. OU recruiting has gotten better as a result of both of those. Now, I understand that comparing OU/SEC NIL is partially unfair to expect Gundy/OSU to do the same. I get it. Thats not my point. My point is that you HAVE to adjust, evolve, alter the way in which you do things or else you and your program will suffer. If Gundy doesnt want to do it that way, thats fine. If the OSU fans who support him think he doesnt have to adjust, evolve, alter his method thats ok too. But youre going to be left in the dust as a program. If we both feel like Gundy is at least equally responsible for the largest portion of the problems…then were on the same page.
