PFB+ Wrestling (Part 1)

I assume he’ll get a medical redshirt, right? Or is that optimistic?

I doubt he will pursue one.

Daton went on Askren’s podcast today.

Some interesting stuff in there. Talked about taking visits to other places even though he was pretty much an OSU lock. Talked about how he just didn’t do enough against Suriano… Which, frankly, is why I think he went on to beat Gilman. You could tell that post-finals Fix is going to do what he needs to do, and force the other guy to adapt to him… Which is probably good. Talked about wrestling a lot as a kid and going everywhere.

Daton is a pretty quiet guy, but it was nice to hear him open up here a little.

I’ll have to try to listen

He is at least requesting one. I don’t know if he’ll get it. It would be his second medical redshirt, which I think would make it more difficult to get. He got one his freshman season.

I said this on Twitter but deleted because it probably comes off as me being a jerk… But I really do hope this doesn’t hurt his deer season. Dude loves nothing more than getting in a deer stand.

On Kaid Brock’s injury, the date the Dr. gave him that they expect him to be cleared to wrestle is February 1st, but that means it’s the first day he can start running, drilling, working, out, etc… Which opens the door that he could come back, but that roughly one and 1/2 month window to recover in time for the NCAA’s is a really short one.

So unless it’s some situation where they know he’s not getting the redshirt and it’s his absolute last chance to wrestle, it’s sort of difficult to see him wrestling this year.

I can’t imagine that he’ll come back unless it’s exceedingly necessary. Still, we can hope for a med-red.

Freshman year was a regular redshirt

So who will we see at 133? Colt Newton? Reece Witcraft as a true frosh? Jet Taylor? Dallas Wilson?

Was it changed or was it always considered a regular redshirt? Didn’t he have it pulled before he got hurt, then later get hurt?

Jet Taylor quit school and wrestling. Colt Newton’s hurt. Dallas Wilson maybe, but I’d guess it’ll be Witcraft unless they really don’t think he’s ready or really want to save his redshirt.

School and wrestling?! Wow…something must have been going on there.

He didn’t wrestle enough and therefore they could do a regular redshirt.

Insert yikes.gif here.

From the roster and eligibility spreadsheet I have there is…

Jacob Fontanez
Andrew Nieman
Bennett Sherrer
Cole Van Vleet
Reece Witcraft

Are all of those guys still around?

Obvious choice is Witcraft if he’s ready to roll.

Depth is getting pretty thin for 125 and 133. Good news is that’s changing with Burks and Mastro and probably 3 years of Fix.

But yeah a medical shirt for Kaid would be good… I’m sure he will get it, but the question is if he will be like Wiegel and be ready to be done. Dude turns 24 this year.

Most are still around to my knowledge.

I’m going to have something in a few days on the main site with a bunch of thoughts on this, but I do think it’s ultimately Witcraft.

Not to give false hope but I think Feb. 1st is a conservative timeline.

I tore my meniscus practically in half playing football in HS back in 2000 and was out a solid 6 months, however I remember the specialist telling me that it would have actually been better if I had also torn my ACL. I can’t remember his exact explanation but I think it has to do with increased blood flow that helps the healing process and I imagine Kaid has access to much more advanced surgery and rehab than I ever did.

After my rehab I was partially cleared to play baseball. I could bat and run bases but the side-to-side nature of plying 3rd base was too much for me at first. Not sure how much of it was mental though bc when u finally put your foot down all the way after being on crutches for over 8 weeks it’s a pretty scary feeling!

My guess is he’ll start his therapy in 6-8 weeks and prob excel through it. Maybe be close to 95-100% by Jan 1st. and able to start working out…when he returns to the mat will just depend on how comfortable he is putting all that strain on his knee again.

With this injury news, does it make sense for Daton to wrestle if he medals at worlds? I know that has been the plan, to see how he does in Kazakhstan and make a decision from there, but a medal would give him a bye to OTT finals so the two week break between NCAAs and OTTs wouldn’t be as big of a deal.

I really think that you redshirt him regardless, let some of the 2020 class studs get in, and make a strong push for 2021-2025 with three of those years including what might be our best wrestler since Eric Guerrero… but it may make this season a bit more exciting if he’s in the lineup…

Remember the first rule of PFB+ Wrestling Recruiting Discussion

Do not talk about PFB+ Recruiting Discussion outside of PFB+

Braxton Amos has reached out to Mastro, Doucet, and Plott and started talking living arrangements and that sort of thing with them.

Still nothing completely definitive though. Even the other commits aren’t sure whether or not he’s fully made up his mind. But they have a plan for who’s living with who, if he does, which is a pretty good sign.
