The portal finally opens Friday.
Even if we got a RB, WR, and a couple of OL that can push the defender a yard down the field. That would actually work wonders compared to what we had seen offensively this season. I think we could make things work with Hejny.
Another nice get would be Caleb Hawkins, Shawnee kid, in an RB rotation with Fields! That assumes Fields stays.
Is HCEM going for 85 or 105? It seems 85 would allow $ to be maxed.
IMHO - DL should be a concern.

So much for that Ohio State argument in the earlier forum
Hopefully 85 or less. In the current landscape, I don’t see a need for anywhere near the 105 max. Too expensive and the guys not getting playing time will hit the portal within a year or 2 anyway. Stashing guys and developing them over 2-3-4 years is mostly over.
Hey champ,
Because Ohio State didn’t want him?
I’m trying hard to make sense of this but I just can’t. Could be my smooth brain but on the surface it seems getting all the players you can is the way to go.
Even if Ohio State wanted him or not is irrelevant. I highly doubt Ohio State would’ve offered anyway with Sayin being only a Sophomore. I didn’t bring that argument up. You and Ketchup did. I told you it’s what best fits Mestemaker’s situation. Obviously he feels being at Oklahoma State was a better fit. Guess I’ll wait to see what I’m right about next
.
Hey champ,
1.) No, neither of us brought up Ohio State. Someone else did (along with Oregon, both of which have entrenched QBs). The proposed schools were fill-ins for big-time programs. I said that if Ohio State were an option, it would be the better choice. It wasn’t an option because I see no evidence they offered (nor Oregon or any other comparable school) and they don’t need a QB. This is called a “hypothetical”. Unintelligent people cannot answer hypothetical questions. This is you. If Ohio State were looking for a starting QB and if they had offered Mestemaker, I believe he would have been wrong not to take the offer, I believe it would have been a better option, and I believe he would have done it.
2.) He believes Oklahoma State was a better fit than what? You just said Ohio State didn’t offer him. What were his other offers? Yes, it’s a better fit than an offer that doesn’t exist. Congratulations on that astute observation.
3.) Did anyone say he wasn’t likely to come here at any point (if this report turns out to be true)? Without knowing of any blueblood or other high-profile offers, yes, Oklahoma State was always a likely destination. No one said it wasn’t, but if Lane Kiffin didn’t have ties to Ole Miss’s backup (which is who he’s speculated to be targeting), for instance, maybe he would have been in on Mestemaker or would be if his first choice fell through. It just so happens that most of the top schools are set at the moment or they have other options/plans.
Yet, I was the first person to point this out to you and Ketchup. I purposely waited so I could see how much of an a55 you both would make of yourselves. Pretending to be smarter than you actually are
. I’m glad that you both know what a better option for Mestemaker is rather than Mestemaker himself
.
Supposedly Indiana and Texas Tech. You know…..the two schools that both won their conference and made the CFP
. I’d say those are some decent offers compared to 1-11 OSU and supposedly a school that has “no money” as you’ve alluded to in the past
. Let’s see what else you will be wrong about.
Not exactly. See what I’ve stated above
.
You think Tech or Indiana couldn’t outbid us for Mestemaker?
Hey champ,
Yes, I already said you didn’t understand hypothetical questions, you don’t need to continue to explain that you don’t understand them.
Not comparable to the schools we were discussing. Tech and Indiana are bankrolled now (more than we are), but they don’t have a history of success. Maybe they’ll become top ten type programs, but they aren’t now. He very well may have been better off at those schools, but those schools are also linked to other QBs that they’re chasing. Mestemaker is more of a Plan B for both of them. Tech is going to make a push for the #1 ranked Brendan Sorsby and Indiana is supposedly looking at Josh Hoover. Moving quickly on Mestemaker and having the relationship with Morris makes us frontrunners.
A 2 year contract of 7 million for a qb sounds pretty well bankrolled. From what I’ve been able to find neither one has paid anyone anything close.
That’s the excuse I’d make to if I kept being wrong
.
Did Ohio State win the Big 10? Who said anything about history of success? It’s obvious that history didn’t matter much for Ohio State, did it?
Or perhaps Tech and Indiana were more concerned with the CFP since Gundy didn’t come close to doing it these last three years?
Hey champ,
So you’re saying we have more money than Texas Tech?
Their highest paid player this year ( that I could find) was a OL that got 5.1million for 3 years. We’ll see, but when our highest paid player is making twice what their highest paid player is making, it tells me something.
It may be telling me, that I don’t know where to look for accurate numbers.
Hey champ,
No, it doesn’t. The reporting (and your comment about accurate numbers is right because who even knows) says Mestemaker is the second-highest paid QB after Miami paid $4.3 for Carson Beck. Does that mean Miami is the richest school and OSU is second? No. This tells you nothing about their relative level of funding.
What it probably actually means is:
1.) These salaries are rapidly accelerating unchecked and we’re going to hear about a lot of “highest ever” paid QBs in succession like we do in the NFL.
2.) It’s worked out nicely for Miami so far, but is Carson Beck the best QB in college football? It suggests to me that less established schools are going to be throwing above market value money at players early in the process to keep the bigger programs from scooping them up or getting in a bidding war with them. I think Mestemaker will be fine, but are we sure he’s going to be worth 2nd highest paid money? His top two opponents this year were USF and Tulane. They lost both games and Mestemaker threw 3 INTs to only 2 TDs in both games. We’ve seen lots of G5 guys in the past put up gaudy numbers, but we know it’s partially a function of competition level.
3.) We were desperate for a QB.
Can it really get any worse than going 1-11 with your only win being against UT-Martin? I think you should probably keep in mind the kid was only a freshman as well. I’d say his gaudy numbers as just a freshman even at the G5 level is more promising than seeing if our offense might hit over 15 points and celebrating that as a moral victory
.
I’d say that’s more of a win at the QB position than “desperation”. Now maybe if Gundy was still coaching we would go get another Ethan Bullock if it was considered desperation. Not a guy that won the Burlsworth trophy this season.
Hey champ,
Before you start assuming opinions I don’t have based on your little fantasies: I think Mestemaker will be good. If he gets paid #1 money in the country, you’d want him to be the #1 player. I’m not confident he’ll be #1 in the conference. Of course, I don’t know if he’ll end up the top paid guy in the conference after Tech lands their guy, especially if that’s Sorsby.
Gundy’s gone, dude. Let it go. We didn’t even have our starting QB last year, so this needless comparison is even more pointless than usual. If Mestemaker only gives us three series this next season, it’s going to be a bad year. I’m looking forward, not back.
